What Disco really stands for

DISCONTINUED!
Probably old news to some, but the Discovery is discontinued. On Michigan Ave this A.M. Land Rover was giving away a new LR3 the Discovery's replacement. They even pulled it up onto the curb to show the truck's awesome off road capability. It's that truck that was posted as the new Discovery on this board some time back. I signed up hoping to win so I could sell the POS for a used D2.
Here's to the end of an era,
Daniel

discontinued in the US... we get the LR3 because they want to copy Lexus, Mercedes and everyone else with cryptic letter/number designations. Hell, Americans are too lazy to call Kentucky Fried Chicken by it's name... it's KFC now.
The rest of the world keeps the Discovery name.

Hey! I think I might take off the old "Discovery" label and replace it with "Discontinued". Just like that Defender I saw one time that took "LAND ROVER" off his hood and rearranged the letters so they spelled out "RAN OVER".
I'm sure LRNA would love that.
You might have started something here. We could all do it as a statement.

New to this site and Land Rovers... I just found, after months of searching a 96 5 speed disco...

Let 'em discontinue our rigs, the market will become flooded with used DII's when the soccer mom's go for the new street friendly LR3 and within a few years, us diehards will be, well die hards... We will again be part of an elite rogue squadron roaming the earth...

Sounds good to me. I have a discontinued MGB and now a discontinued Disco!

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say this but the wife drives and Oldsmobile Mini van which will be discontinued shortly too!

Geeez!

Hey now! Don't knock Oldsmobile. I used to race my 72 Olds Cutlass at the track.
455cid, 0.125 overbore for a total of 482cid, 11:1 compression, flowed C cast heads, the works.
Was able to pull the front wheels off the ground.
Just think of what you could do with this engine in the back of that minivan with an old Tornado transaxle. The future looks bright for that minivan now doesn't it.

...At least it's your wife and not you driving the mini van.

Steve when I worked at LR I was told the name change was due to the fact the sometimes-dismal quality record of the Discovery had tainted the name in the average US-sheeple's head.

imagine how the old timers felt when they diccontinued the "farmers friend" aka s 1 then they discontuined the PTO driven accesories. PTO drivern winches and log spliters, along went the powered trailers! then the classic range rovers and so on so forth.
imagine buying a new range rover fitted with the wood spliting spindle that fitted on the hud, or asking for it to come with the tow behind thrashing machine .... now we are going back fifty years and that is when the real owners of land rovers where in their prime. so why complain we all like our 95 discoveries or 3.5 v8. !
everyone complains about their pentium one computer or p two's now imagine doing what we all do but using a comodore vic or playing video games on an atari! techonology and change! its for the better you will see! lol ;)

I'd be inclined to order the Disco badges from Europe and replace the LR3 badges with them.

Ducati- that's the company line on it- it sounds better than "we decided to copy the competition's naming conventions for lazy Americans." :D

Luis - could you be thinking of that bobbed Range Rover in CO? In his case he just took off the G and E to come up with RAN OVER.

Any Ayn Rand fans?

Always thought "Rand Lover" would look funny as a front badge.

Take that same S1 and put in a V8, locking diff's, and heavy duty axles, and watch it sell like mad.... I think thats why that D-90 wanna be truck was looking so good to allot of people (can't remember the name of it right now. It's the one that can't seem to meet the US safety specs, or somwthing. "Cross Lander" maybe???). It's simple, not bad looking, and within a resonable price range. That LR3 is way too expensive, crappy thought of a 4x4 susp. set-up, and a little too long. I'm sure Ford will sell the crap out of them, but it just goes behind the back of what Land Rover was. The Discovery was pushing it, but the LR3 is just not a Rover. In a 4x4 test, I'm sure it will kick everything elses ass within it's class, but really, look what it's going against. Let's see the LR3 go head to head with the Rubicon. -yea, that's what I thought......

Dan, how about spending a night in a Rubicon or in LR3, stuck in snow somewhere at 9k ft (or in a truck stop near Las Vegas in 120F)?

I'm sure more than one person has used that letter rearrangement. I do recall that it was a yellow D90 in Washington or Oregon.

Craig, I'm quite shocked that you could even bear to write the name Ayn Rand. :D

Now if you say that you're a fan, I might just have a grabber.

Who is John Galt?

Eh, Atlas Shrugged was interesting when I was in junior high... wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a fan..
