What do I need?

The first photo is my truck. I want to lift my rover so that it looks more like the second photo(I jacked up the truck to take a photo) - The 3rd photo is Charles Bell's disco(I got the photo from the gallery) I like the way his truck looks - height that is. What do I need to do to my truck to lift it? Springs, Shocks, etc. Could I install OME HD Shocks and Springs and that do the trick, or will I have to get a steering dampner and extend brake lines? I want to end up with 245/75/16 I think. Charles Bell's disco has 235/85/16 If I remember correct. I do not intend to get a winch for several years, but I do load my rack with a few kayaks and the back with plenty of camping gear ever other week or so. What all do I need - I want to do it right so I dont have any problems later on. So what all do I need to get the job done right but also the cheapest way possible.

By the way...

I am still in high school and so this is my daily driver so it still needs to have comfort. When I put 245/75/16, will that cause my brakes to not work as good? What is the diff in 235/85/16 and 245/75/16? How will putting a lift change how my truck takes hills sideways?

the difference between 245/75 and 235/85 is the 235's are about an inch taller but are also a little narrower. for cheapness i would go with an old man emu, about $600. or if you want a little more lift, around 3", get the rovertym springs with old man emu shocks. all together you should get out for less than $800. thats what i'm doing because i am in college and have no money.

Ryan,
I'd recommend the OME 3" with EE 1" spacer in the rear and their "rear shock mount kit". This will allow you to use your stock lenght shocks (that is if there are in decent shape) and save $$$ for college books. You might want to check out the EE site under the
"resources" tab.
I installed the above on my 97 and I pleased with the ride quality and look.

After searching DiscoWeb tech section and looking at some charts in Rovers North, Ive decided to go with the Land Rover Med. Heavy Duty Springs and Blistein Shocks. 235/85/16 will do the trick I think.

My question is - will this be all I need or will I have to buy a steering stabilizer or something else? I am only going to have a 2" lift so is it needed and if so what does it do?

Will a 2" lift like this cause vibrations? Will it do harm to my vehicle in long run?
**I have to keep in mind this is my daily driver**

Hey Ryan

my 95 DI is running OME springs and shocks which give it about 2". At this height i havent had any need for longer brake lines or steering stablizer relocation, BUT if you run trails that have LOTS of articulation AND 245's you will need to trim your rear fender wells.

in any event longer brake lines and relocating your steering stablizer is always a "good measure" but at the above lift, not "necessary"

Thanks Ken!

I am going with the 235/85/16 for added height and so I wont have to trim the rear.

You will have to trim the rear with 235.85 or you can do the rear fender relocation kit. You do not need a new ome steering dampener, however it will help with driving. I drove with the wood head for about a month before i put the ome dampener, and it made a difference. Just hearing from what you are talking about I would go with 245.75 tires. I got a lift kit from RTE, their 2 inch lift kit. It gave me about 2.5 inches and cost me about $630. I have extended rear brake lines, but I took off the rear sway bars so i get a little bit more articulation. Mine is a daily driver (not like I drive much since I am at college), but really is does not make the ride that much worse. Yes, you will wander a bit more because you are taller and with the rack I believe you have it will cause it to go a little sideways when it is windy on the interstate.

Just my thoughts...

You will have to trim the rear with that size. In addition to that, you will notice a significant decrease in acceleration. I decided on the OME HD front and OME MD/HD rear springs and appropriate shocks. No spacers. Tires, I went with the GY MTR 245.75.16s and acceleration was essentially not affected. I am overly satisfied with this setup as it is still very on-road and highway friendly as its an everyday driver. I plan on moving to the 235.85s once I go with lockers so I can regear to 4.1x. Unless you plan on regearing for those tires, I feel you will be dissappointed. Just my opinion from talking with other owners who went that route. Here is a pic of my 98 D1. I didnt cut the fenders, hence the mangled up fenders behind the rear tire. Oh well, it aint a Passat.
