Basically, do you buy a GSM phone here and a SIM card in Europe? Who gives the phone #?
Or it is simpler to buy a no-service-contract GSM phone in Europe?

It's easier to rent the pnone in europe and check the voice mail from there. The quad band phones run almost $500.00 and cost $1.25 a minute. Checked into it the other day while getting ready to head to Lo0ndon for a couple of weeks.

Just found a tri-band phone for $85, and a SIM card shouldn't be much. Let's see how it works out. I've rented a phone before, and it was not worth it.

If you buy a tri band GSM phone here it has to be unlocked before it
can be used in Europe with a European carrier. The phone won't work
by just replacing SIM card.

unlock your phone

I have a quad band phone and have had no trouble talking to family in europe, japan...or even china...just make sure your phone is 'unlocked" also set up a rate plan (cingular has plans for specific countries) for where you will be...its usually around $1 per minute in most places....if all else fails get a satellite phone :D

OK, to report on the experience:

- bought a brand new 3-band (900,1800, and 1900MHz) phone at geeks.com (Oceanside, CA), for $80
- paid 30 euro set-up fee with SFR in Paris (could be any carrier, this one happen to be the 1st I stumbled across)
- spent about 40 euros in 7 days, 99% of it on international long distance calls.

Could've bought a used GSM unlocked phone off eBay for as little as $20.
