What Happened To The Guys Out West?

I think part of the reason is also the EPA and Gov't cracking down on places to wheel. Here in NC there used to be 3 or 4 places within 30-45 minutes away. Now, the closest one is a jaunt through the forest, nothing technical or complicated. If you wanna really wheel, you go to Uwharrie or Windrock, both around 3 hrs from here.

No place to wheel, nothing to talk about, nothing to modify, nothing to break, nothing to fix.

Nike, that's a terrible analogy and but a great example of how far discoweb has fallen.

You think 3hrs is too far away to wheel ? The point of this site and forum 10 years ago was to promote multi-day cross country "overland" (before we knew the word) trips.

You would be ridiculed if you were building your truck up just to go locally. Sure you need to practice locally before you wanted to do your western epic, but that was about it. If you bought a disco just to wheel locally you probably would be dissatisfied with the vehicle, and were advise to look at selling and buying a toyota or jeep, because they were better suited.

back to the point. 3hs is still fucking close, if you can't drive 3hrs in total comfort in a land rover discovery you have a malfunctioning vehicle or you fucking ruined it with big tires and bolt on shit.

Don't have time or can't afford gas to drive 3 hrs? Then you bought the wrong car. These are not inexpensive vehicles to keep on the road, they require a lot of maintenance and parts are not widely available.

So discoweb lots its offroad mojo, and that's okay. But it's still the place to come for getting your discovery fixed. If it looses that, then pull the plug or sell out with lots of banners and adds.

Dweb has been saturated with ExPo blow-hards and guys who sit around and jerk off to the sound of Glenn Beck's voice.

Dweb is still the most viable resource for disco/ rangie technical information and that's all I use it for.

1) whats wrong with big tires?
2) im curious what your definition of bolt on shit is. winch, bumpers, sliders, OR expensive HID lamps, roof top tents, racks with every landscaping tool known to man bolted on it, jerry cans, etc. im honestly curious, not making a smart ass comment.
you are correct about the drive to wheel thing, 3 hours is a minimum drive to anywhere from maryland, aside from the cove. driving half the day to wheel is part of it. if you really enjoy wheeling, the long drive shouldn't even be an issue. yes it is a drag driving 3 hours to get there, but the anticipation of getting there and knowing you're going to have a blast is worth it.

as far as the comments about rover's getting more affordable attracting a 'different' crowd, i have to say that happens with almost every vehicle. lots of nice rides out there now owned by people that could never afford them new or slightly used, so of course it will attract to a younger different crowd, perhaps an obnoxious immature type of crowd.
and yes, i am guilty of being the drunk obnoxious embarrassing type of rover owner, however after a wheeling trip earlier this year i realized i needed to quit drinking and mature up a bit, aside from looking like an idiot i made the group look like idiots as well. BUT, for some reason when you are silly rich it seems to be okay to shove beer bottles behind seat cushions in the lobby?

being affordable vehicles brings in a new wave. i've always been a european vehicle enthusiast and a four wheeling enthusiast. the AFFORDABILITY is what attracted me to rovers. if i did half the damage i've done to my D2 to my old gwagen i would've spent thousands more. the affordability and the ability of the truck has made me a rover enthusiast. i think we are all rover enthusiasts, even garrett, but it seems the whole Expedition lifestyle dwarfs it now. not everything you wear and own has to be TACTICAL!!! unless of course, you are a real life operator.

and when did DWEB become fox news?

It seems the expo-thing has somewhat turned this whole past time upside down - There was a time when driving/wheeling was the object or end, now it seems it is only a means to an end which is cooking on $500 grills. (My time at the Expo Rally/Show "thing" in AZ really drove that home for me.)

x2.

I need to think about this one.
Ten years ago I was out four-wheeling two or three weekends a month, most of it within 100 miles from home.
Now it is more like two or three weeks a year - but it can be hundreds of miles from home. Doesn't mean I'll ditch a $30 Coleman grill for something ten times as fancy, but a $1.29 gas station bear claw doesn't quite do it on a long trip.
So the intent of expo may not have been all that wrong, regardless of what it turned into.

"Jack-of-all-trades Disco" - that can't be said better. It just is.

How many people on this board do you think REGULARLY take their trucks anywhere beyond 50 miles of their home? I'm not talking about camping at some state park, but getting "out there" somewhere new and beyond.

What you're saying is what I enjoy far more than heading to some off road park here on the east coast. That doesn't do it for me. Rolling around on a congested "park" with trails called "eXtreme rocker panel buster" and "twisted axle" have no appeal to me. I'd rather drive days and get to somewhere I've never been before and get off the roads on some moderate trails, camp and bust out a pound of bacon.

Quality vs. quantity I suppose.

Though I did ditch the Coleman years ago. :)

Big tires might work for a K5 Blazer where the scale of the vehicle might still work. But not a Rover. It looks like shit; and unless you plan on turning it into a buggy or rock crawler it makes the truck close to useless as a DD.

Why ruin the very thing(s) that make the Rovers such versatile trucks. It's striking that balance. Slapping on some 35's, hacking up the quarter panels, off set wheels and a shit load of stickers makes it a vehicle that does only some things well and less the "jack-of-all-trades".

The progression always seems to start from stock, build it up with big tires and everything else and then bring it back closer to stock. Realizing as the "progression" occurred that you went beyond the point of usefulness and into area that it's no longer a Land Rover product. And now some abortion you created that is at best amateurish.

Case in point - Sir Daniel Chapman III. (JSQ II)

I've been on this board for ~5 years now. And, honestly, I've contributed some tech, but nothing extreme. The "big" stuff was done by others, and, in reality, I'm not going to go to 5" lift ect.

Stock has been good for me. Now that it's not my DD anymore, I'll probably put a 2" lift and that's about it. Do I go for long "expeditions?" No. that was never the point for me owning it. For me, it replaced my Jeep as a vehicle to hunt/fish in, but with more room and comfort. I've not been able to take off for a week to wheel/camp for a long time - kids/family/work have a way of getting in the way. Sorry, but it's true.

So, do I think Dweb will always have more new info - probably not. Most topics have been tried, the best solutions figured out.

That said, I still come here to banter in General because most people are like minded. Not to mention that when I do have an issue that needs to be sorted on my truck, this is the best place for info.

I did not once complain about the drive, only stated the time period required to travel to two destinations where we frequently wheel. No my vehicle is not uncomfortable to drive, but it does have bolt ons (winch is bolted to the bumper, which is in turn bolted to the frame horns; lights are bolted to the rack bolted to the drip rail; ladder is bolted to the back door and snorkel is bolted to the fender), and it does use more fuel than my other vehicles. However, when I started there were quite a few places to get out locally (Caney Fork, Tellico, etc.). These places were shut down by the EPA and Forestry Service and I miss them. I probably exaggerated when I said nothing to fix, etc., but I do feel like the lessening number of destinations is a contributing factor to the down numbers at DWeb, especially by some who are regarded as being core members.

Discoweb is definitely not the same as it was 10 years ago. Then again, none of us are the same as we were 10 years ago.

I barely ever peruse the tech section anymore. Aside from the odd technical issue on my "new" '04 I pretty much have this stuff figured out. It's probably pretty much the same for most everyone else that used to be on here years ago. There are plenty of new tech questions but it's been answered 1,000 times over. Now I just check out trucks and parts for sale to see if anything interests me and then cruise through General to pass time and see what kind of hijinks Garrett and his troop of gay male prostitutes are up to.

And if I lived somewhere where it took hours to get away from pavement and buildings I would go insane.

IMO it went downhill after not long after KVT fiasco.

No more epic trips. No more epic threads. Nothing new posted. The morons took over.

People still take some good trips, I think a lot of people just have better things to do than immediately post up photos and descriptions of their trips. It's like this whole facebook & twitter crap....people eat a bowl of fucking cheerios with sliced bananas and feel a need to tell the world about their epic breakfast. I don't get it.
