What is the temp light with the cog around it for-trans or T case?

This light popped up on my 94 yesterday, just normal driving. I don't have an owners manual so I'm not sure of its for the trans or the transfer case. I'm guessing one (or both needs) fluid and will add to both but I wanted to know what the light means.

Thanks, so it's the oil temp in the trans which is odd as I wasn't towing anything and it wasn't hot out.

Probably just the sensor playing up. Common on the D2 and thats just what it does, gives false warnings of over temp.
