Head light and wiper switches- and sometimes only the mounting, not the electrical portion; hazard switch will get dusty, sticky and prevent the turn signals from working when stuck only partially engaged; u-joints- the front shaft is pretty short, right?; Taillamp wiring if not fitted with the military waterproofing; lamp sockets on the later ones due to corrosion (minor stuff, but could be a problem if one was going country to country and the border crossing encourages squeaky wheel greasing. Plus they are small, light pieces.) and all of the regular stuff that could go wrong on any Rover that hopefully could get attended to before heading out on that trip of a lifetime: water pumps, belts, wheel bearings, brakes.

in the Tdi I carry a spare fuel lift pump, 3 of each of the belts (even a spare timing belt), waterpump (used but good), fan clutch, & 3 u joints (used 1) and the three main coolant hoses.

You need to be a lot more specific on which Defender you're talking about. One of the common expedition failures is the shock towers or shocks, this is why you see people mounting 2 per spring. I'm mounting the dual fronts and using the outboard one for the shock so I can more easily get to them in the event they need to be adjusted or replaced. The new towers/rings etc are all significantly stronger than stock and galvanized. I'm also galvanizing things like the axle housings to prevent the spring seat rot taking out the other end as well.

It really depends on what kind of use you're asking it to do as well.
