What tent is everyone using?

As I reread a large portion of this thread, I realized that photos sure would make it a lot more interesting.

This is a Mountain Hardware Trango 3.1

That's a bomber tent Craig. I have a buddy who's a river/mountain guide here in the Sierras who's a gear guru and he talks about this tent all the time. If you need a monster 4-season tent I think one like Craig's would be suh-weet!

Small little 2 person tent I usually keep in my truck.. the nice thing about it is its size.. I think I may be able to fit it up on the roof rack with a little modifications (only problem is its a side entry, so i'll i have to find a way to get in!)

NF Mountain 25

My wife and I have used the North Face Mountain 25 for nearly 7 years. Great tent. We went camping in the Poconos earlier this summer. A few substantial rainstorms blew in, dumping a $hitload of rain. Everyone else in our party cried about being wet and cold, we were dry and warm. It was awesome.

Our first child is due in about a month, so the Mountain 25 will be too small for the three of us. I'll have to find something comparable, but a bit bigger before next spring.

Its been fantastic so far. I use it for winter snowshoeing trips. I went out several times last winter and I was extremely comfy when it was cold, and snowing wet snow. The thing that amazed me the most though is how well it breathes in the summer. We took it into 95+ degrees a couple weeks ago, and it was still very comfortable. The only downside to it is that it is heavy with the rainfly (8 lbs). On longer trips I just put the rainfly and stakes in one pack, and the tent in the other.

We have a great, small, backpacking tent.....

but does anyone have suggestions for a larger tent for car camping? We need a bigger one for MAR: preferably one that is about 6' tall with room for standing/changing. I would love to get one with the screen room attached, but that is not a requirement. Just need room to put gear inside and possibly house two dogs in addition to two people! :D

Size and weight are not concerns b/c we will have two empty trucks and a roofrack for carrying gear.

Sus,

You described our tent from LL Bean. There is a screen room in the front that opens up to a large enclosed area in which is a little higher than 6'.

We also have 2 Labs and it fits all of us (wife and me) very well. Plus withstood a fairly intense wind/snow storm when we were in Great Sand Dunes NP.

Wouldn't use it as a Winter tent, yet, for other seasons, very nice. Especially the screen room as its a cool place to hang out when its raining out and for keeping stuff under roof, yet, not in the tent. Like wet labs until we can dry them!

I would like to suggest the Cabelas Alaskan Guide model. It is bomb proof and still has about the best ventilation going. There are also many accessories e.g. bigger valances and one that you can connect two of the guide models together. I have mostly done mountaineering with NF, Marmot, et al. but with a growing family and car camping I have been very impressed with Cabelas Alaskan Guide. Their customer service is great too. Good luck!

Great thread: Never gave much thought to tents as its really been only me and my oldest. Just have a cheapo $110 Eureka thats plenty big enough for us, bought from local big box store. Camping only once or twice a year, its more than paid for itself over the last 4 years. Just took it over to the UK and back. That taught me next time I'm getting sleeping bags with compression sacks.

I don't think I have posted in this thread yet,

But if I have, ignore me. I've got a Mountain Hardware PCT 1. Just the right size for me.

Cheers,

I use a Sierra Designs Jupiter CD. The thing is over 10years old and has held up very well. Listed as a 3 man, but its perfect for 2 adults and gear.

Coleman weathermaster - Sleeps my wife and I on our queen size air mattress, our 2 year old, and our baby in a pack and play. Also has room left over to park the disco inside.

When it comes to tents, you should get the best you can afford. In my experience there is a big difference in department store tents vs. high end tents.

Maybe, maybe not. I used a $40 Eureka 2-main tent from WalMart on my motorcycle trip to Labrador last year. Packs small & light and kept me dry in the crap weather we experienced up there. I've also use it a lot since and it's been holding up nicely. the only thing I don't like about it is the lack of a vestibule, but I don't mind keeping all my crap inside the tent anyway.

That's funny...

Randy, I am truly sorry for your tent situation and everyone else at MAR, it was nasty.

My son Garrett had a great time with your dogs Friday morning at breakfast. I was lucky that I was able to bring the hybrid with us.

I'm using a kelty streamside right now...great little 2 person tent, but looking for a good 4 season tent, this thread has been extremely useful! Just curious but has anyone had any luck with online outdoor stores? I have used REI and campmor but where would one head to find the best deal on a 4 season tent?
sounds like MAR was rather tricky this year...
