Browning 30-06 semi with redfield 3x9

of all the firearms i hunt with 308, 243 ,35 ,45-70, and others that can take a deer i always always pick up the 30-06.
its never failed and im on the last three rounds of a box of win failsafe i have had for 15 years.most seasons have been productive but not all.
this season is Buck only.no does allowed in my area this year ,even as a land owner.
if things are good i will go into 2006 with two rounds remaining.

I normally use my Mauser M96 25-06. One of the last guns Mauser made before getting bought out. very nice shooter has a straight pull back action, just like a machine gun :D

I know it is a small round but what do you think about a 223 round for deer hunting.

i have tried it years ago when i first got my AR15.
even with proper ammo it was not effective enough.

go bigger less chance of wounding and maiming

only my opinion of course.

Depends on how good a shot you are. Proper placement goes a long way with any ammo or type of gun. .223 right behind the shoulder will go clean through a deer, if it was me using this round, I would get a good hollow point in the heaviest load you can find. I have shot deer with everything from a 25-06 to 30-40 krag plus 12 and 20 gauge shotguns.

The .223 round has been used in combat for years and can kill very effectivly in the right hands. I haven't used in on deer yet, but I do have one and have been told that it works well, with the right load.

Have you shot a deer with a 340 Weatherby before? Any excessive meat damage? What type of bullet? I have a .338 Win Mag & was curious about if its too much for deer.

Last few years, I have been hunting a really brushy spot on top of the MTN. Theres a big daddy in there, but I only see him before season.....Anyway, hes there this years too, and looking grey, but rackaful :D

In years past, I have used a 30-30 in this spot. But, I think I'm gonna use the Glock 9mm this year, just to make it interesting. Hell, in this brush, I can't see but 30 yards max anyway. Plus, it's a 1.5 hour hike in, all straight up. I climb 1500/1800 feet in about 1/4 mile! The lightened load will be really nice!!!

hey mike
just my opinion but i think 338 is a bit big for white tail.
i used a 338 win mag in Afrika for all my heavy plains game , Kudu , wildebeast (black),
Zebra, Gemsbuck and a few others.these are big animals 4x weight of a whitetail and the 338 did big damage.
but WTF use it if you like it and are use to it.

i consider my 338 a real kicker and a bit painfull.
it scoped me a couple of times and my ey relief is correct.

A 9mm is woefully inadequate on a deer, hell you can shoot a gangbanger with it 5 times and he runs off, bring the 30-30. Imagine catching up with this big fellow you see there each year and losing him to an inadequate european police pistol. If Murphy has anything to do with it you will see him at 100 yards staring at you.

In some states you can't even use .223 or 9mm legally on deer. Colorado is (or was) one of them,,,but it's been a long time since my hunters ed. Can't remember what the min. requirement is.

hey kevin, good lookin mauser.i still like wood stocks over composite but thats just my opinion.
timmy, i've used .223 on deer & hogs. its very capable with the right ammo but you have no room for error.
here are a few more pic's from my collection
colt 1911A1 1943 canadian lend lease, 1515 made, all in the duplicate ser# range with remington-rand, & 1 of only 11 known to have made it back to the US after ww2.

I just ordered a Weatherby Sub-MOA in matte stainless, chambered for 7mm remington mag. Probably going to use the old Nikon optics off my old Remington 7MM that is being retired.

9MM for deer? you'd better be a good shot with that thing, it'll probably just piss 'em off.
