Yes...me too...ghetto lever on my truck! Proud to say my cdl lever cost me less than five dollars and took less than ten minutes to install. Best mod I have done on my truck (with the exception of my rear detroit) and it was also the cheapest and easiest!!!!

I absolutely don't understand why they're so expensive.

The cable and connecting pieces are only available Genuine Rover parts.

I found an 04 shifter that the salvage yard only wanted $50, but they cut the cables. Called the dealer to find out the cables were over $200 each.

Does the Ashcroft shifter have a provision for the 03-04 style solenoid, or do I have to get an actual 04 shifter if I wanted to keep that feature for some reason?

10 minutes? you want a job?

$5, right on.

you are absolutely wrong about the time needed and the price paid. you are misleading someone to think they can do that. how did you get the black bezel rivets drilled out then open the tunnel to pull that bezel out? how long did it take you to dog leg the linkage just right?
and it costs more than $5 to get the whole assembly so you dont have to dogleg the D1 linkage.
please post your instructions with pictures so we can time you.

If you do not have an 04 you will not have this solenoid.

I'm pretty sure at least some of the 03s have the solenoid in the shifter like the 04s. One of the used parts places shows 99-02, 03, and of course 04 as each being different.

He was talking about the ghetto lever. There used to be instructions and a blueprint around here somewhere, but I can't find it at the moment.

I made mine out of scrap flat bar laying aroud the shop. Had nuts, bolts and washers on hand as well. Didn't cost me a dime and took a hour or two to fab up and install.

ghetto lever? is that where you put a piece of flat stock over the nipple and a nut to secure, then crawl under the truck and move the bar? that is pretty ghetto, cheap, and easy.
i assumed ghetto meant putting a d1 shifter in instead of an '04 type shifter.

Fyi, I had the solenoid in my 03.

I am sorry.
If you have the Lock out and want to use it. the Ashcroft kit will not work for you.

Yep, thats it. Wish I could find those blueprints again.

The lever runs from the CDL nipple, out between the body and frame near the passenger side front mud flap. I just squat down and pull the lever out to engage and push it in to disengage. Its comprised of a tab to bolt down on the CDL nipple and a longer lever to actually move it without having to crawl under the vehicle. I also made a small support bracket that bolts to the frame to support the assembly and keep it from rattling.

ironically, i made one of those 'handles' for my buddy back in '02ish when he had the truck i now own. it's pretty easy if you have a mill. i forget what end mill i used, but you need to use an end mill for the flat part of the nipple, then i think it was a deformed M8 lock nut. but you need a welding sleeve so you don't burn your forearm locking it after several beers!

I installed an 04 I bought from a guy parting one out, removed the solenoid, clipped the Blue/Black wire, done and done.

A mill would help. As I recall, I drilled the hole out a bit small then did the final fitting with a die grinder. A little slow perhaps, but it worked.

So when you install the Ashcroft kit - which wire do you need to cut to get the ABS/traction control to work properly?

I know there is a video of the installation but it never mentions the wire...

This is for an 01.

I got lazy trying to google the answer to your actual question, but if you install a SLABS computer from an 03 or 04, you don't have to cut any wire, the newer computers where designed to work with the CDL.

Have not heard of that option before...what do those puters run?
