What do you want to use Linux for?

I've been running linux since 1991. Each distro has its pros/cons depending on the user, and the intended purpose. After experimenting with several distros I run Gentoo Linux on both Servers and laptops. My personal reasons for selecting Gentoo over the others are:

- Because I can get a true minimal install. I know exactly what I have installed which makes it much easier to keep track of security advisories. It also means I don't have a bunch of unnecessary daemons running in the background.

- Because with one command, the entire system is upgraded to the current version of all software installed.

- Because it is compiled, there are never any incompatibilities between software and libraries it depends on. Emerge manages the dependencies for you.

People who don't like Gentoo complain about the long compile times. I personally install from pre-compiled CDs, and then upgrade from there. When I do compile big packages, I just start it before going home from work, or before going to bed, and just let it run. I've spent much more time resolving binary dependencies with other distros (Redhat) than waiting for software to compile with Gentoo.

- The Gentoo community is very friendly, and knowledgable.

I've got SuSe 10 on my server.

RedHat 8 (I think, could be 7) on a workstation about to get re-purposed.

Gentoo has a place somewhere around here, just not sure where yet. Tried it on the server that's runnig SuSe but had some issue with it booting from the SCSI RAID-5 drive configuration I have. Probably try it out on an old Powerbook before long. Or maybe it will go on the repurposed workstation?

I have been using Darwin Ports on my laptop (OS X) for a while and really, REALLY like it. So I'm used to the benefits of Portage (a.k.a. emerge) and am really looking forward to using a Linux distro with the same capabilities.

Have been MS Windows Free for 5 years and counting. See no real need for MS Windows and I doubt I am going to any time soon.

I just upgraded to Fedora Core 4.

I've been running Redhat versions for about 8 years. Before that I played around with Slackware, but didn't really use it.

Debian. One of the few Linux distro's that is even developed openly. Distros like Red Hat aren't developed openly, unless they've changed their methods, until late in the cycle.
