Which series?

I am thinking of adding to my rover collection which is currently 1. I love defenders but am starting to think a series would be really cool. I would wheel but also would tinker with it and try fixing it up. Which would be the best for me especially considering I don't want to buy a 30 k fully restored one. Opinions? Would just like to hear from the series owners out there.

Thanks

Well, basically 2 choices, 88 and 109. 88 are better offroad, 109 can swallow a huge amount of stuff and people. SII SIII really doesnt matter you can get parts for either. Avoid SI as parts are getting hard to find.

Just figureout which fits your needs better.

If you are going to buy a series stick with either series II/IIA or III. He is right about it being hard to find parts for the SI's. 88's are a lot of fun, especially if you like the D90's. And but the one in the best all around condition you can find for a reasonable price.

Stick with the IIa or III. Ser II's are few and far between and have some "unique" bits that can be hard to come by.

Remember, III's are the only fully synchronized transmission. Get a IIa and learn to double clutch.

My daughter thinks its hilarious when I double clutch her Dodge CTD p/u 6-speed.

Oh, and remember, 88's are really just parts stores for 109's :)

As a second car to tinker with get whatever you like. Series 1s arent that hard to get parts for if you know where to look. I dont think any of the folks that recommended against a series one actually own one ;) Not to mention you can pretty much retrofit the S2-S3 stuff in a pinch.

I think the high-water mark for Rover was between 1968 and 1971. Ever since then, it has been all downhill - present models included. The only real advantage to the Series III (and I've owned a '72 since new) is the fully-synchro trannmission.

It is 1950's technology. Everything comes apart and can be rebuilt with a minimum of special tools. It was a vehicle designed to operate in the Third World, where a fully-equipped service establisment might have *two* rocks - and yes, I have used a roadside rock to 'fix' my vehicle. In comparison, for my '96 Disco, the Electronic Troubleshooting Manual is 3" thick and about 8 pounds. The same documentation for the Series III is *one page*.

Cheers

I disagree and say look for a pre-'68 series IIA. It is just much cooler with the headlights in the grill rather than the wings. Also, the transfer case is rock solid and you get the sweet independent motor windshield wipers. Nothing wrong at all with a series III but a series IIA just looks so much more the part, and a 68-71 IIA looks like a series III sans the plastic grill.

My $.02 - and of course I am incredibly biased. :)

As far as 109 versus 88, IIa versus III, IMHO that doesn't matter as much, buy the nicest one you can find and afford. FWIW......
