Ditch those Firestones or Bridgestones and go with the BFG AT's! If you're not going to do any serious mud or rocks, they are beefie enough to play off-road on the average trail and terrific on the street for an off-road tire. Being out east, the BFG AT's will serve you well on those icy cold morning commutes when everyone else is slip sliding away...

The best all around tire that I have ever used is the Toyo M-55. Great in the mud. Good in snow. Not bad in sand. Lasts for ever on gravel. I had a set on my 3/4 ton 4x4. They lasted 80,000 miles. The only complaint is that they had a slight howl @ 45mph. I use them on my Rover in the winter. Load Range E multi-ply tough as nails. Do a search for them and a consumer review. You won't be disappointed. I was gonna buy mudders for the spring and summer, but the tread works so well, I haven't had to.

I run the BFG ATs and think they are an excellent allaround tire they maybe old school but there is a reason they are still around.

you can't go wrong with BFG AT.... but if you ever get the off road bug will will want something a little more aggressive like the BFG MT... so think ahead

I ran a set of 31x10.50 BFG AT's on an FJ-62 Land Cruiser for a long time and did 2 trips out west, one to AZ and one to UT and those tires amazed me. A fully loaded truck wieghing in at about 6500 lbs and those tires took all the abuse I could throw at them and were smooth and quiet on the way home on the highway as they day I put them on. Now I have BFG MT km's on my Defender, soon on my '99 D1 and when my GF finishes off the tires on my '99 DII it will get BFG AT's. I am a fan for life. Although the Toyo Open Country AT's on my RRC are kicking some serious ass, and I must say I'm super impressed! They are also worth a look.

bfg at....tire is great in almost all conditions...slick rock...and wears like no other. winner hands down.
I would have agreed until I moved to VA. I rode BFG A/T's in CO with no complaints. An outstanding tire. But it's not up to the mud, loose dirt, and wet rock that you encounter in the East.

Though you are dead-on: for slick-rock and almost all dry western conditions it's a great tire with awesome conformability (sidewall flex). It's also superior on the road in ice & snow.
