when my truck (2001 DII) is running, I hear a whinning noise, it gets louder as I accelerate.. one of my friends suggested that it might be the power steering fluid.. but i wanted to check here so when I check it out after work i'll have a few possibilities.. this first happened after playing in the mud on saturday.

Thanks!

The whining noise is normal and I have never heard a D2 that didn't have it. I can't remember exactly what part it is, but it is some throttle bearing that wears down and creats the whine. My mechanic told me I could replace it, but that it would be a waste since it does not harm the truck in any way to have it worn, just causes the noise. I don't even notice the whine anymore.

Check and see if your fan clutch (viscous coupler) is pooched. It makes a whining sound when it goes (can sound a bit like transmission whine) and can be quite loud. Becomes more noticeable as you accelerate too.

Went through the same thing with mine a couple of years ago (99 D2). It was the alternator.

i second and third the alternator. after having went through four of them since january i have become quite to officiando of the music of the alternator. a whine that changes pitch with acceleration could be a bunch of things, worn difs, transmission, transfer case, wheel bearings, but i will lay dollars to donuts that it is the alternator.

to verify htis, pop the hood with the engine running. get your self a mechanics stethoscope. if you dont have on a goo alternative is to use a lenght of dowel rod, or more convienantly a long handled screw driver, place the meal end of the screw driver against the alternator casing, and press your ear against the handle. then either have someone sit inside and gie it some gas or you can do it yourself at the throttle linkage. listen for the pitch change as you throttle up and down tis will help you isolate it or rule it out.

if it is your alt, get a new one soon or you will also find yourself getting a new battery along with the alternator.
