White smoke from my D2

My girlfriend was following me home today on the Interstate from a Land Rover event in Nashville (to Knoxville). Every time my 2001 Discovery downshifted to climb a hill (RPM range between 3000 and 4000), a little white smoke would blow out the exhaust until it down shifted again.

I've got 46,000 miles on my D2, off-road a lot, and have cut off the rear resonator for clearance. I spent the day before in moderate off-roading (low RPM's all day) so there might have been some build-up on the valves and pistons.

I'm concerned that my head gasket or valve seats might be going. What do you guys think?

I have heard this is normal. Do you smell any coolant or rather are you losing coolant at a rapid pace and not seeing it on the ground? If it is not billows of white smoke I would say that all is well. First things first, pressure test the system and go from there. Best of luck.

Not sure about you hose/plug issue, but the cause of your smoking is typical of most Rovers and I am suprised that most of the people on here haven't seen it... it is caused by the ECU running the engine too rich. When you accelarate hard you are dumping more gas in the engine that it can burn at any one time....which is giving you the smoke issue.

That is why when they rechip the ECU they reset the throttle response in the mid and high range or the throttle possition.
I found the aforementioned info for you about the smoke from fellow Dweber Joey S. My Rover smokes, knocks, shivers, and shakes 1998 D1..Hope this helps. Also might want to do a search on "white smoke" --- or check through the Archives as well.

could it be ****** fluid coming out the overflow? This happened to a friend who pushed his D2 a little hard towing a trailer up a long mountain pass.

sorry for that last - apparently, you cannot say ******, so here it goes, Transmission Fluid

White smoke is always coolant or water, aren't you still under warranty, if so go see the dealer.

The question of whether or not I'm under warranty may be open to debate. The last time my truck was at the dealer the regional rep for corporate came through. He took one look at my rig and said "no warranty work."

I don't know if he tagged my VIN number or not.

My guess is that they cannot void the warranty if it is not related to the modification.

You could also take it to another dealer if they are not willing to do the work.

Last year I went through a bit of smoke. Sometimes white and sometimes bluish. I know you are thinking, WTF? After 6 months of wrangling with LR, they replaced my Long Block for a sleeve imperfection. At the same time they noted my radiator as being partially clogged. My engine was consuming oil at a rate of 1 quart every 800 miles. This all occurred around the 45-47K marks.

So I recommend to you to address this quickly. As far as the warranty thing goes, LR took care of everything. The comment above about the engine not modified is valid.

"white smoke is always coolant or water" except when it is transmission fluid spilling out of the overflow onto hot exhaust.

David,
They can't do that, I have worked for Rover and others and there are guide line they must follow.
You need to address a certified lett to the dealer ship service manager as well as the local zone office. In this letter you want to ask the under where is it written they can voir your warranty, you want a copy from the as well as a letter from the zone manager stating their refusal to do any more warranty of your truck. Let them know that you are going to file an arbitration complaint, read about it in your warranty book, and see what they say.
I have a 3" lift on my truck and have had many warranty repairs made by warranty, the only thing they won't cover is the lift parts.
Good luck,
Mike J.
