i agree, so let's try to get it back on topic. this topic intrest me because i can see where in some type if hunting it would help, but i had a talk with a person that said he wears his in his stand and it is one that he bought from a military guy. just started me thinking if anyone else did it and what is the reason behind it. and would also like to see other peoples ghillies. cheers. c

That would annoy the piss out of me.

Guess it would be good for Goose hunting n an open field, though.

I don't hunt with mine. In fact I don't really hunt. But I've got one, likely for similar reasons to yours. Mine looks like this

In context, it came from my time with these folks

My ghillie was made from a night desert parka, within the platoon it was personal preference as to what you made it from, somewhat less so on how it was constructed...

i've got a pseudo-ghillie suit. i've never worn it hunting as of yet...i usually just use it when i'm pulling pranks haha. i'm sure i'll wear it hunting one day, but i'm not doing any hunting that requires something so extreme... i mean you can hunt squirrels and hogs wearing neon lights. its more of a joke for me lol

I live in South Texas, Whitetail Deer and Dove Hunting are big down here and most of us locals get a kick out of the folks that come out of the city to hunt and are wearing camo from head to toe... I can see that a Ghillie Suit would be a great thing to have for water foul or for turkeys, but outside of that-IMHO it is pointless in the hunting world. I usually end up hunting in whatever I am wearing that day-most of the time a pair of jeans and a khaki shirt. I killed my first whitetail buck while wearing a white t-shirt and jeans- when I was about 10 years old. I am really into long range shooting and sniper tactics-and have considered building a ghillie just for grins, but never got a round to it. If you enjoy camo and enjoy getting "in to the hunt"-then by all means make yourself look like a bush-otherwise, get comfortable and warm and have fun.

Well, i'll resurect this for a question, where do you that make your own suits get your jute, i dont want to get just any store bought suit. net seems pretty much the same all round, but wondering about jute vs. synthetic from those that have used them. Any feedback is welcome.

Mine's different colors of burlap subsequently peeled into individual threads...then tied together in clumps on the sewn and shoe-gooed on net.

The burlap stripping experience nearly ended my marriage (earlier than it ended anyway) as it was a nasty process that I did in the middle of our living room.

On the upside, the ghillie turned out really well and the fabric does a good job of mimicking natural colors and textures.

yeah, thats the nice part of buying the jute bundles, no stripping threads out of the b-lap. everywhere i've looked averages out to 5'x4' net with 5 lbs of predyed jute for 38-45 bucks. 5'x9' with 7 lbs runs 58-69 bucks. I'm just doing my back, top of sleeves, and back of legs. i'm gonna go for the 5 lb kit and see how far that gets me. i'm thinking of using the thread sparingly and leave room for natural add-ins. Canvas w/paddinig sewn on the front of an old set of BDU's. any other methods or tips?

God I wish I'd had the opportunity to have it in bundles...my platoon told us what color rolls of burlap to get on a Friday and said "it better be right by Monday am" It was as much a rite of passage as anything else.

Some thoughts:
-Def leave room for, and use a lot of, natural veg as that is really what makes the whole concept work.
-That being said, use a lot of tan and brown vice green when you are putting on the threads. The natural temptation is to put on all kinds of green and stuff because it looks cool, the reality is that the tan/browns put you into the negative space which is where you want to be.
-Not sure what your application is for, but you may want to consider using something one piece vice BDU top/bottom. Either way you'll want to make a veil out of a boonie, but my point with the single piece is that for most uses this gives you enough coverage in all but the toughest stalks where people will get you b/c of your boots. I referenced it above, but the old Desert Storm era night desert parkas work well for a single piece ghillie-easy to get into, easy to get out of compared to top & bottoms.

Drop me a line if you need any help, pics, whatever. Ghillies are def a personal thing so enjoy making it your own.

go to home d and get a roll of natural jute rope. cut to length desired, seperate to desired thickness, tie to netting, drag behind truck or atv, then find you a mud hole and do your little pig roll.

pm if you want pics of mine i just did with just this rope. again, nothing takes the place of nat veg.
