I was wondering who out there makes good hand winches. Seems like most the ones you see are crappy. This guy i was wheeling with one time had a nice one that he pulled my truck side ways off a tree with.

I've got a More Power Puller from Forestry Suppliers. Excellent hand winch, IMO. I've winched a GMC 2500HD with the passenger side wheels over the mountain side back up on the trail with one. As well as the same truck out of other positions. Slow as can be, but it works. Even if you have a electric winch, I think its worth having one to take along for "special situations" like you mentioned.

Also search "tirfor" and read the second thread. Garrett also contributes with some good info there about sandwich girls in CT within the thread.

Thats similar if not the same as the Trifor if i remember correctly and they work well. I used one to pull out a D110 out of a mud pit.

They seem a bit eaiser to stow than those large drum type hand winches too, although i think having the cable loose could cause a problem too.

The Hi Lift makes a good hand winch too if you have the kit for it. If you have one i cant see why you dont just get the winch kit for it instead of having 2 "hand winches"

Doesn't the hi-lift allow for you to use it as a VERY short distance winch?

Nevermind :) Just read it and gunny indicated it. Was too quick to hit "Reply", lol.

Im sure if you rig it correctly you could make a longer pull, going to have to check that out when i get home...

Yes, you can winch with a HiLift. It's sweaty and tedious work but it works.

That top clamp "beak" or clevis is only rated to around 5k lbs. I believe. The shear pin in the jack "trolley" is good to 7k pounds. Like I said, it works it's just slow and hard. Like Garrett's mom.

I too have a Moore Power Puller and I have used my HighLift as my winch as well, both several times. The Power Puller is much simpler to use than the HL, but that is not saying much.
The times I needed these were to either winch backwards or to pull the rear-end sideways. They have their place for sure and I am never without one or the other.

How many tons or at least what would the min. be I was looking at one the other day that was a 2 ton rated.

I'd have to go down to the shop and look, but mine is rated as 3 ton I think. But heck, its got 5/16" cable and is bulit like a tank. Honestly, I think it will do quite a bit more that its rated for.
