So I am in the middle of a rebuild, and am going to need a new cam. Anyone like to suggest something that they are using (other than OEM) that they are happy with? I understand that different cams do different things - so I guess I should clarify. I am mostly "overlanding" with a 2" lift and 32" tires, so not needing anything extreme or emphasizing low end torque. A little upper end power would be nice if anything.

I put a Crower cam in my 4.6 way back in '19 that I'm happy with. I don't remember the the name of the business, but I called "the guy" somewhere in Michigan and he got me sorted out.

Wow - the crower certainly sounds perfect - maybe I'll do that...

"Crower Power Compu-Pro camshafts offer more power with an extended rpm range for your stock or near-stock engine, plus enhanced mileage. These camshafts show strong low-end and midrange power for spirited driving on or off-road. Crower uses USA-milled materials in their manufacturing and, with 55 years of experience and know-how, produces superior performance cams. When you need power, Crower has the cams with the performance levels and specs to build a successful vehicle package."

5x228 or 5x229 are the only real candidates. replace the x with a 0 for a distributor or 3 if its a gems or bosch

229 is a great cam for a 4.6, but I thought it gave up a little too much low end in a 3.9. Not noticeable at sea level but 8k and up the engine felt gutless off idle

One of my 4.6 trucks has the 228 and it would probably be a great 4.0 cam, but the 229 in a 4.6 feels perkier at 3000 rpm and up

My son's D2 also had a crower and had no issues. It was a heavy truck so i can't speak to how much quicker/faster it actually was but the truck was not a dog either. It performed like my 4.0 GEMS in a 90.

I am finally going to say something in public but many of us engine guys no longer use crower for cams and or lifters. I will not go into detail here but i will say look at other brands. Topline for lifters and i just talked to Schneider about making Camshafts going forward.

I'd love to hear why. It doesnt seem like there are any other off the shelf options for gems/bosch and nothing domestic for 3.9

That is what one of my issues was too. I have been using Crower since they started supplying cams for the rover V8, originally i was getting cams from Mark at D&D. There are months i would buy 7 cam and lifter sets from Crower but as of a few months ago i can no longer trust the products produced over the last 2 years and will source my cams and lifters elsewhere.

I got a cam for a 3.5 RV8 from Woody at The Wedge Shop. I was very happy with it, but it was for a TR8, so likely a different tune from what you’re after. Worth checking with him though. I think they’ve been building GEMS 4.0/4.6 motors of late.

The Wedgeshop will definitely know what to advise.

Wow - I do love these forums - so maybe not a good idea to look at the Crower - I will check out these other sources or just get a stock version.
I wiil add, while the Wedge Shop started with focus on TR8s, they have for a long time now done a lot with Land Rover engine rebuilds. They really are Rover V8 experts in just about all applications.
