Why do Rovers leak?

I know that the simple anwser is they are full of fluids. The Japanese can build the same basic piece of machinery (engine/******/axle) that will functon many years & 10's of thousands of miles without leaking. What gives? Poor materials, machine work, inferior sealants, shitty workmanship?

What gives?

the correct answer is...
... all of the above.

I wonder if there are trade unions of auto workers in Japan...

OTOH, my '89 is leak-free (sunroof excluded).

I don't know Steve, I've seen badly leaking Japanese cars - but very few. The '02 Toyota (if it isn't a LC) is made by UAW, so no wonders here.

I've been to the junk yards more often lately - and last time happened to unbolt the same part off a Dodge pickup and a Trooper, of the same vintage. Broke the Craftsman ratchet on the Dodge part, but no problems with the Isuzu. The 15-year-old fasteners came apart very clean, with no rust at all, and shiny anodizing.

Don't get me wrong, I've owned Brit cars on & off for 20+ years so I know what I was in for. But shit this thing was made in 1999! My FJ-62 Landcrusher leaked like a sieve @ 225K, dropped the pan to find a pinhole rusted between the pan & spot welded skid plate  , welded that shut & no leak. Guess the HOA just gonna have to deal w/ an oil stained driveway :D

My Yota was made in Japan- I bought Angela a Celica, but she never learned how to drive a stick so I sold it off. It had more problems than my Brit vehicles, but not as many as the Chrysler Stratus I had years ago. What a POS that was.
The yota leaked a LOT and from many places and the rear wiper fell off the morning after I bought it. I'd expect that from a ROVER though...

Im confused, my dealer told me that they leak to prevent rust, and that it was perfectly normal. So you mean to tell me that he was lying to me? Damnit, now im out of warranty.

seriously though, maybe they leak becasue of the abuse we give them? or maybe thats just me. I dont think they use the best gasket though. mayeb replace all of them.

Are you sure that there are fluids in that 89? :D

Mine didn't leak when I first got it but, now it self lubes it's underside. It doesn't really leave a puddle anywhere but, the oil pan, transfer case, and the valve covers are starting to get a nice coating.. I'm sure that it just needs new seals and gaskets and it would be good as new. One day I'll get around to it.

Why is the sky blue?
Why is the Ocean green in some parts and Blue in others?
Why must I start losing my hair at 28?
Why must women create drama?

These questions can all be classified with "Why do Rovers leak?"

It is what it is.

But seriously why do women create drama where there is none

An engineer neighbor of mine, who knows nothing about rovers and their leaking habits asked me about the engine.

When I told him it was a 1963 vintage design aluminum block engine, his comment was "does it leak a lot?"

I think I gave him the answer before he asked the question.

come to think of it, mine doesn't leak  I've got some moist areas but I have yet to find a single drop on the garage floor (and I put a piece of cardboard under there so that I will be able to notice right away if it does). I check the fluids regularly and they all seem to be at normal levels.

Should I be worried

No driveway stains here

Of course, I don't have a driveway. But, my 97 DI doesn't leak enough to leave a drop even if I did. A fair amount of oil coating my sump since I dropped it for maintenance but that is my fault...the guys were kicking me outta the shop so I had to put everything together and didn't seal it properly...will fix that later.
