Why does Rover V8 require premium fuel?

The cheap for me and I am a bitch for maintenance.
160K and I fly up Mt. Hood without a ping or hesitation. OK I don't fly up Mt. Hood it is 3 ton Rover.

There are multiple considerations here.

Regular Chevron is different than regular 7-11 or Arco gas.

I used ARCO premium 92 octane for a few years and since there is little detergent in that gas eventually my injectors started getting dirty. It was a slow process and not noticed right away.

Never did I use regular but eventually I could not tell the difference between regular and premium. It was all getting a bit rough.

I speak only of my experience with the 4.6.

So my mechanic suggested I switch to another brand with added detergents... specifically Chevron premium.

I did that and used the techron and seafoam gas treatments on the last tank before each oil change for a while.

Now I can tell the engine runs way smoother and has more power. I can tell if i get bad, stale, or bogus fuel by how smooth it runs.

Not that I'm an expert but I would submit that possibly you don't actually know how your truck might run with the proper fuel, especially if you've always run low grade.

My experience with the 4.6 is if you have a totally clean fuel system the difference between regular 87 and premium 92 is more than obvious.

if it is not obvious you should consider cleaning your fuel system and running several tanks of top level premium detergent added fuel through your truck while adding a premium gas additive before each oil change.

Possibly even doing the direct method of Seafoam injector cleaning... I didn't have to go to that extent.

Just saying if you really can't tell the difference in how your 4.6 runs with regular or premium that you might consider the possibility that you have bigger issues.

I know when i was in that mode it took a few tanks of premium to even notice a difference. Now I can tell instantly.

once a zombie put a regular when I was refueling at a gas stop on new jersey turnpike...while i had a quarter of the premium left in my tank, I was doing NYC to DC. I can tell I noticed a slight loss of power, nothing else.
upon arrival I burnt half of the tank, read the receipt that read "regular" and refueled with premium.

I run premium in all my cars and Rovers. The Pump Zombies have also blessed me with regular a time or two and I have seen big difference in MPG and power. I'm real picky about the fuel I use in my cars. I also add fuel injector cleaner twice a month. I try to get my fuel from the same gas station every time I can. Gulf or Sonoco. Velaro is shit fuel. I try to stay away from ethanol as much as I can but it seems to be everywhere!

Stock.

They are more potent all over the power-band, but most notably at the top end.

Cheers,

My d2 gets at least a tank of 110 low lead once a year, as my uncle has a fly in cabin in Ontario. I usually go up in the fall, his fuel tank needs to be emptied, the tank in my rover makes for a fine home.

The power difference is quite noticeable, and it smells wonderful (I don't have cats)

low lead is 100 not 110.
and for anyone else, dont try this if you have catalytic converters. the lead will foul them.
I ran 100LL in my 72 bronco and always had problems when the fuel would evaporate out of the float bowl, the dye would leave a gooey mess. and the tank selector valve didnt like it either, it was much stiffer to operate. it would take a while to disolve it all and make everything work nice and freely again. obviously not a problem on an injected vehicle.
also the water in the fuel would freeze and the dirt would clog up the filter in less than 100 miles sometimes, but that was because sometimes the fuel barrels would get left outside:banghead:

If you have heat sleeves on your wires, you don't have to worry about much. Ever since I put sleeves on my wires, I have run 87 and there are no problems...FWIW

Again, like Kennith said two fucking years ago.

You have the cheapfucks that convince themselves they don't need it because they don't notice any difference.

Then there are other people.

I may not maintain my truck the best but, it only receives premium fuel. and better yet, the gas station I go to has no ethanol.

My '98 which is now my trail rig I have always put Premium in. The one time I put Regular in it ran like absolute shit.
But my '96 which is now my daily driver has had Regular put in it for about a decade and it seems to run fine.
I know PT says he runs his on cow shit or something so I guess each one is different.

I always run 91 (highest octane we have here) as well, but last week my wife ran too low on gas and had to put in regular because she was a rural area and that was the only thing available. It's now running like complete crap, no power, idling erratically after driving, and smells like straight gas coming out the exhaust. The only good thing is that it is using it up in no time, I was probably getting 5 mpg before diluting it with premium.

PT runs his truck (whenever that happens) on what we'd consider pancake-flat ground, with high humidity in summer months. He probably never gets close to detonation.
Had he tried the same going up a 6% grade at 80 mph, with 120F and 20% RH outside, the take may have been different.

:p

We get it Peter.... you live in the Devil's Canyon. Where you can fry an egg on your ballsack, you have to drive 80mph to escape the goblins, and you have to go up a 6% grade to get to the bathroom.

It sounds miserable where you live.

Come on, you know what I am talking about. It's awesome where I live, but I have to see other places every now and then.
