Why in the fuck, after replacing my alternator is my serp. belt now about 3" from even being close to thinking about going back on? It took me about 10 minutes to replace the alternator and about three hours to not have the serp. belt anywhere close to going back on. Am I missing something?

WTF????

you should not have to muscle with it. a proper tensioner tool or socket and it should give you the room you need to get the belt on. otherwise you have it routed wrong, the wrong belt or are not getting the tensioner back down far enough.

On my '95, I find it easiest to remove the power steering pump pulley. I then put a breaker bar on the tensioner, relieve as much tension as possible while routing the serpentine belt.

The last step is putting the serpentine around the (disconnected) power steering pulley, and then I slip the power steering pulley onto its shaft.

OMG if you find this easier you are doing something wrong.

this process takes about 5 min, its all about the proper use of a pry bar and being able to fully depress back the tensioner pulley.
