Will start but won't accelerate?

I'm trying to figure out what the problem is with my 89 classic. While driving down the highway, all display lights come on, stayed on for a minute or two, then went out again. While this is going on, the vehicle runs as usual. After about 15 minutes on the road, when I pressed the accelerator, the vehicle just stop accelerating. The motor sounds fine, but it wont go. The battery and alternator, as well as all belts are fine and there is no slipping of the belts. A transmission problem has been mentioned. Going on almost a year, I have noticed a clunking noise coming from the front end when coming to a stop from 40-50 MPH. Also, on cool mornings, when in drive, after sitting overnight, it takes 30 seconds to a minute, while pressing the accelerator before accelertion actually occurs. The EFI light is also on. What could the problem be? I'm lost as to this point. All help is greatly appreciated.

Try this....pop the hood...Get a flat-blade screw driver and remove the hose that runs from the Mass-Air-flow meter to the plenum...look inside...that hose has a nasty habit of the inside collapsing...the outside looks dandy, but the manifold will be trying to suck the inside of the hose in to the plenum. Replace hose.

I could be completely wrong though....

Good luck.

Test your air flow meter - your workshop manual will tell you

From memory it should show 0.2V - 0.7V across pin 35 and ground

I just recently went to pick up the Rover and here what its doing. After having used transmission installed and its like a different animal. The motor sputters and sounds sick and a squel(whine) is present. The whine seems to be coming from the motor and is most noticeable at startup and seems to diminish upon acceleration. The motor is sluggish and has a different sound to it than before and the top speed is around 55 MPH now. Before all of this happend with the vehicle in neutral, the motor sounded fine, but I could only sputter through a parking lot at a few miles per hour. My first thought before taking to the mechanic was alternator(electrical) and/or motor, but now the mechanic as well as I are lost as to what may be the problem. What can the problem be?
