Has anyone been able to fit a winch in the factory bumper? I don't want to use the factory winch tray which would stick out too far. I am currenty trying out a Nissan Patrol ARB bumper on my P38 and will have to field test it before I will know if that was the rigth answer or not.

I mounted a 12k winch between D1 framerails and inside a non-winch GDE bumper. My guess is that you can fit it behind a stock bumper, but it is likely to protrude somewhat below it (unless you're planning on a 2000-lb little thing). The solenoid box will have to be relocated, so prepare to spend about $100 in 0 gauge cable and half a day on wiring.

It's really not that much different than before. You lose a little on the approach angle when measuring to the absolute lowest point of the bumper, which is the center of it and is actually a skid. You gain on the approach angles in front of each tire because the new bumper tucks up and away better than the factory bumper. The new bumper is also steel, holds a winch, and has recovery points. If you use the factory bumper and put the factory winch mount on it, you kill your approach angle.
