what pulling power would be appropriate for a winch on a DI?

The standard seems to be 9,000lb, and by standard I mean what just about everyone has. I have a Warn 9000 it's enough to pull me out, and to pull out jeeps and rovers. Hummers might have to double pull with snatch and anchor your rover, but I have never pulled one out ..................yet.

8000k is a good minimum, 9000k is great, I can single-line pull a Hummer with mine. But buy the biggest and best you can afford, that way it doesn't operate at full capacity as much and lasts longer.

There was a decent winch thread a while back...as I was looking too. Still haven't decided on Warn/Mile marker/Superwinch, etc etc
I have a tough time justifying 800 bucks for a Warn, and was looking for options too.

I did to but I waited till 4x4 parts had a sale. I got it from there online store with tax (there based in CA so I had to pay tax) $745 with free shipping. Wait till their X-mas sale just about everything is %10 off and free shipping.
