Window tint....which % to get??

I'm looking into tinting the windows on my Disco, 'cause I can't stand them being completely see-through. The only problem I'm having is deciding on the right % of tint to choose.

I wan't functionality in the dark, especially if I'm in the woods at night. The tint that came on my RRC was so dark, I couldn't see anything around me in the woods without the windows down. At the same time I want a fairly dark tint to block the sun and make it a little harder to see inside...so basically I need a compromise of the two.

What percentages do you guys have on your rigs? Any suggestions would be great.

Here in Indiana there is a limit to how much tinting you are allowed. It has something to do with law enforcement being able to see into the car during a traffic stop. I mention this because I?ve read about people getting tickets for too much tinting. The case I recall had to do with someone taking his car to the state police and getting an ok only to be pulled over later and given a ticket.

You do have to watch it which means don't get limo tint. In Ohio you can't have anything below 50%, which honestly you can't tell it is tinted at all.

I would say get around 35% tint. I have that on my bmw and it's not dark at night at all but it blocks the sun. It looks good. I would snap a picture, but it's night.

You should just go to a tint shop and see what you like

When I was younger I got dark window tint on my truck. I knew it was too dark, but I still had to have it. Limo Tint, we're talking *black*. So one day I'm driving down the freeway to work, I see a motorcop sitting on the side of the freeway, looking across traffic. Sure enough, 2 miles later he's behind me and lights me up. As he comes up to the passenger side, I roll the window down all the way. He asks for the usual, license, reg proof of ins. and for me to roll my window up about 4 inches.
cop: "Do you know what the window tint law is in Arizona?"
me: "Uh, no."
cop:" it's 35%...." he procedes to pull a device from his pocket and slides it over my window. "your windows are 2.9%."
me: "uhhh....."

Cost me $150 plus $50 to remove the tint.

so... I recommend 35% window tint on the driver's windows, darker in the back, depending on your feelings :)

Make damn sure they offer a bubble warrenty...

And pay for the good stuff.

Cheers,

I dunno, I kinda like the purple film, especially with the overlapping seams in the back window. This looks especially nice with champagne paint with flaking clearcoat. Add a crown air freshener to the dashboard as a final touch to tie it all together.

I have 5% on my cars (Its actually 3% according to a meter), and I like it a lot for me but most don't like it, especially at night. For you, I would reccomend doing 35% on the front two windows, and 20% on the back. Thats just my .02

35% on front two windows. if rear is factory tinted go with a 35% over it. if not tinted I would go with a 15-20% over the back doors and rear.
If you liked the look of my truck that is what I had on it.

I'd leave it off the front windows. I have it, but would prefer none at night.

I've had tint on all my vehichles ranging from limo black 5% to 50% at the lightest.

I agree with most here, 35% is really what you'd be looking for on the backs for sure and maybe 50% on the fronts to take the edge off of the sun and give some UV protection. Even here in Ohio where 50% is the legal limit they never seem to bother anyone with 35%, esp if it's on only the back ones. It's only once you get below that ~20% that you'll start getting tickets or pulled over it seems.

I've had two window tint tickets over the years and several warnings all of which were on 20% or darker cars -- never so much as a flinch with 35%. Even so the ticket was $60 and I just saw it as the price of having tint. It's not a moving violation or anything, so no insurance increases. (BTW, I never took it off, it's still on all the cars.)

In NV we have a limit but no one cares. My Exploder I had years ago had limo tint all around even on the windshield. That was a bit much. I felt like I could weld throught it.

I wont ever do that again.

Ash,

Personally, I don't like window tinting. Actually, I hate it. :(

The reason I dislike it is because it cuts down on my ability to see through tinted vehicles to see what is happening ahead of the tinted vehicle.

I can't count the number of times that someone in a tinted vehicle has been distracted by a cell phone conversation and has almost plowed into the vehicle in front of them.

Defensive driving is so necessary in Florida that schools began prohibiting Mom's with window tinting to transport children on field trips.

However, I can empathize with your desire to tint your windowns since we have extremely bright year round sunshine. As a compromise, I'd suggest investing in some high quality marine or aviation sun glasses.

Just my 2 cents.

Good Luck :) Jamie

Equally sound advice...I've always liked Serengeti Eyewear.

Even so, 50% may take a bit of glare off without impeading really in any way visibility. =)

My truck was tinted when I bought it.....apparently it was done by the original owner as an aftermarket addition...because I've seen very few 95s that had it. It's also scratched in a few places.

That being said, I'm VERY glad I have it. It helps a lot with glare, etc. My front two windows have none, but the rear two and cargo area are all done. Just enough that you can't really see what is inside without getting close, but light enough that I have no problems seeing and it doesn't look too tacky.

Check this picture, from when I first bought it, to see what I'm talking about.

I did mine dark so I could see the screen on my nav system. I hate when wheeling, and am going to have it pulled off soon.

Sun tint makes a very light tint that offers a ton of UV protection if that is a concern.
