windows 98 question

can a dsl connection be set up on a pc with win 98 on it only?

Yes. As for support I suspect your dsl provider will not support Win98 because Microsoft no longer supports Win98. So if you have any questions they cannot lean on Microsoft and therefore won't support you.

There may be a PPPoE support issue as that was added after Win98. Most if not all new modems include that internally. If you want to use the older internal ethernet to direct connect you will need to address that. Or just get a cheap new router.

In addition most of the new auto install browser based software will probably barf on Win98 and the old IE. You will need to manually install the connection.

Depends on the provider, whether they require PPOE or some other authentication method. But with any PC, you should not connect it directly to a DSL or cable modem. Buy a Dlink/linksys/netgear 'router' and connect the PC to that. In that case, the windows pc will only need an ethernet card and tcp/ip installed (don't remember if it was installed by default back then). windows 98 is far from secure and would be easily hacked if directly connected.
