Wiper Motor Connection

During the height of a big spring snowstorm last Thursday the wipers in my 99D1 failed. I had to continue the drive without them and considering how wet and slushy it was, that was not easy. I did some online research and and looked at my shop manual and decided to tear into it last Friday morning.

I checked the fuse and it was good. I was expecting it to be the motor since I could not hear it running. When I got everything torn apart so I could see what was going on, I was pleasantly surprised. The nut and lockwasher that connects the arm to the motor had worked itself loose and the arm was not connected anymore. The nut and bolt were in an ice cube of water, i had to bring them side to thaw out. So I reconnected everything and after I put the wiper arms on, I realized I had an issue. They tried to move down first. I took the arms off and then realized that they would go down, and then park in the upright position high up on the windshield. The picture I looked at for reference was for a right hand drive vehicle. Oops I guessed wrong and then had to take everything back apart again and rework it.

I was not able to find a good reference pic for the correct orientation of the arms on the motor for a LHD vehicle. I have it working but I am still not sure it is where it is supposed to be. Anyone have any insight how they set theirs up if they have done this before?

Disconnect the arms again.
Turn the ignition on and wiper switch on then off again and the motor will go to the park position.
Move the wipers to the park position and reconnect to the motor.
The park sensor is internal to the motor so if all electrical connections are made and its been switched on and then off it will self park.
Wipers can then be put in correct orientation and will remain there if nut is tight and splines undamaged.

my understanding is that the wiper arms are designed to come loose like that when they are stuck or frozen in place by ice, snow, etc.

this was an intentional design to keep the wiper arm motors from burning up.

i keep an open ended socket wrench in all my rovers with D1 arms just in case.
