I just had a Nissan Versa for 6 days in SoCal and it was much better than I thought it was going to be. The CVT was a strange beast though.

I rented a Cobalt. They are a real pile. I took it back the next day, got a Kia it wasn't bad at all.

X2. i travel frequently for business and half the time i get the cobalt. The only thing worse than the cobalt, was the 2 door cobalt. that was a REAL pile. had those shitty long doors that were on mid seventy camaros, the ones where the glass has no outer frame. i beg for the Ford Focus every time, it gets better mileage and the sirrius always works (the 09's and 10's.)

I rented a Dodge Avenger in Hawaii. It was sucktastic. Small windows, lousy visibility, and the interior was encased in acres of cheap plastic. Plus it got lousy mileage considering it was a 4-cylinder.

At least I didn't look like one of those tools in a soft-top Jeep Wrangler.

Two worst were:

In the US: a Kia - seats were like sitting on concrete. a 15 min ride was horrible.

In Europe: a Opel diesel - going above 80 Km/h and the car shook like a $0.25 massage bed in a crappy hotel. Good news - go above 120 km/h and the vibes went away.

I've had the Mustang on a few rentals recently. Quite happy. Not the GT but better than anything else on the lot.

I think it was a mazda 5 they gave me to drive for 2 months while I was going back and forth with the insurance company after my accident. It was a total pile of shit.. sort of like a micro mini van, my girlfriend even made fun of me. I got a speeding ticket driving that piece of shit down to TN. Although, I didn't have a care in the world pulling the e brake at highway speeds or doing huge burnouts with oil.

A Subaru dealer around Joplin Missouri gave me an early 90's wagon as a loaner when the headgaskets went bad on my legacy on the way back from Colorado. They didn't make me sign anything. I don't think the car was even in the dealers name. They just walked up and tossed me the keys. Funny thing was that I didn't even ask for a rental but I took it and proceeded to beat the shit out of it over the next couple days. It held up really well besides shutting down on the highway when I floored it.

I think the only good rental car I've EVER had was a Subaru Outback. Had a Nissan in Britain that was OK - little hatch back. Don't remember what model it was, but it drove well enough, cornered well enough, and was fast enough. It was VERY efficient though, I think I averaged about 35 mpg over a week or two. Had a Mazda 6 that was OK too, in Northern California.

Bad ones include a Ford Focus, Jeep Commander, and something else that I HATED but can't remember.

'07 Dodge Stratus is both the worst rental I've ever driven, and the worst vehicle I've ever driven or ridden in... by far, including my old beat up 85 Toyota "The YO" pickup truck (the tiny ones) w/ 4-banger, and an old Buick called "ol' blue" that was trashed and had spoons with peanut butter in the back seat from the early '80s. The peanut butter and the Buick were probably equally as old.

I could tell that there was a lot of effort from Dodge to design the absolute worst car in the world. Many e-brake power slides were had before that unit went back. It needed to be punished.

Rented a Mazda 3 a while back, that was a crappy little car.

Rented a Ford Escape. Fun little SUV thingie. Got the SUV thingie because I was working an off road event and I needed something that wasn't going to drop a muffler at every bump. Overall, I would rent one again.

Last two were the Toyota Camry and a Malibu. Half way through the trip we had to turn in the Camry because it had a nail in the tire (easier for everyone to get that fixed before it turned into a problem). They switched it out for a Malibu which was actually very nice. Couldn't get the satellite radio to work but otherwise nice.

The Escape was through Enterprise, rented outta Dulles. They treated me very well. The Camry/Malibu was Hertz. No problems there.

We had a Dodge Caliper or Caliber (w/e it is) once as a loaner. Worst car I've ever been in. It didn't even have power locks (is that even not an option anymore?), not cruise control, basically a pile of plastic, rode horrible, more road noise at 30mph than a disco at 80mph. Usually you get something halfway decent so they can sell you a future car so to speak.
