I have a chance to get an LR3 from a dealership that is running a really good deal. Problem is it is one of the Land Rover Buy-Backs. Lemon law buy back. Would you buy one of these. It has been recertified and has a warranty until 65k miles. And has "been fixed". At least that is what I am told. My question is, would you trust it?

Not completely sure. I was told it was bought back because it was quiting/stalling when the cruise control was used. There was something wrong in the fuel tank and they apparently resolved that issue. It was also having a suspension fault which was cured by a new compressor. Both items were causing faults on multiple systems. None of the work was done at the dealership selling the vehicle. Apparently on the 2005 when one faults, they pretty much all fault. We recently had a ABS problem on our other 05 and it sent a whole slew of faults all across the dash. Does anyone know if these are typical problems in the 05's? We have another 06 that has not had a single issue except for tires.

I am going to have them send me the history.

Knowing that little bit of history, would you trust it?

Depends on the history, but I doubt I'd trust it from what you're saying. I could be imagining it, but there seems to be a pattern when reading the boards - there are good ones and bad ones. If it has major problems out of the gate, it continues to be a PITA, but then their are many others that never had any big issues, my 05 included. Maybe it's Karma :p

On a side note, I got a letter from my Florida dealer a while back wanting to buy mine back for it's 'pedigree' history. They say they are finding lots of refurbished Katrina cars coming through auction now...so be cautious of where it came from too.

My '05 had both the gas tank recall and the compressor recall done. I've never heard of that sort of problem with the cruise control. Mine has been troublefree since the two items were taken care of.

How many miles? Maybe they can give you a 75k warranty or maybe even 100k. The more they have to pay for, the better. Maybe you can get them to do the brakes too...

You can at least try, because I bet they're going to be pretty sincere about trying to unload it. It is a liability for them to have this sit on their lot.

I actually decided against it. They sent me the history on the vehicle and the entire history before it was bought back was deleted except for the tire replacement. Since it was bought back they have put 3000 miles on it it and during that time someone left the windows open and soaked the interior and during that time is when the tank and compressor were replaced. I assume both under recall. So the tank and compressor obviously had nothing to do with the problem. Its history was shady so I decided against it.

They have since called me back with 2 more buybacks. Apparently there were alot of these things from 05 that were bought back by Land Rover because of state lemon laws. So far I have found 6 since I started looking for another LR3. They are sending me the history on both of those 2 tomorrow. But as a daily driver, I'm not sure I want to risk it. Plus it shows up as a lemon buy back on the carfax. Once you buy them you would probably have a hell of a time selling unless you listed it cheap. And getting Land Rover to buy it back a second time might be a task also. Here in Kentucky you have to take the vehicle back 10 times in one year for the same thing in order to declare a lemon.

I'm really just curious how many people on here have had reoccuring issues on their 05's. As I stated earlier I have never had any problems with our 06.

If it was indeed a "buy back," It's gotta' be a really bad truck or it came from a really bad dealership. LRNA will do a "factory assisted trade" long before any issue gets near lemon law. Factory assisted trades have no red flags when resold to the unsuspecting consumer. They did a lot of them in Buffalo. Does nobody ever wonder why a very low mileage truck is at the auction?

Buy Back cars 90% of the time are fine. It is usually a combination of the customers frustration with something minor and a poor tech not getting it right the 1st couple times it was in for repairs. Also the factory repairs them before they are released to a dealer for resale and they usually put a few miles on them to make sure they are repaired. also they will extend a portion of the waranty as a good will for buying a RAV.

Sounds like you made a wise decision on that car since someone is playing games there. You definetly do not want a water dammaged car. those are the worst.
