The 99 was only made in a turbo for one year. I had a non-turbo car in college. Good little engines, but the 4 speeds desperately needed another gear. Thus why lots of people swap in the 5 speeds. For about a decade my family had only Saabs - 900s and 9000s and then switched to Volvos (850s) and Mercs. I was a big fan of the 16V 900s. My Saab 99 in college was a beast in the snow. The first time Penn State shut down ever due to snow was in 1993 when I was there and it motored through it all just fine.
The guy that had my Saab before me (one owner car) wrote down every fill up, oil change and trip - how many passengers, fuel mileage, etc. Crazy clean car. I worked part time in college for the local Saab service manager who was moonlighting at night.
