You are out there in the middle of nowhere for sure :ack:

My wife spends a week in Gillette about every 5 weeks but they fly her in and she drives a company car (not the rover) while she is there. I heard that the fishing is good up there so I might go with her this summer and spend a week fishing

Looks like you are the only one

Bill,
Not to hijack your thread, but I saw on your website that it's possible to fit a canvas top to any 109. Is it possible to fit one on a five-door wagon? I've never seen one but that would be sweet if it can be done. Just curious.

Can you point me to a link or site that has some details on adding a canvas top to a wagon? I'm interested in checking that out but I have never seen one w/ this mod.
thanks

It's not. Station Wagons were never designed to accommodate a soft top. You would have to swap tubs to get a soft top.

Check out the beach runner at ECR and see how much work is involved.

Bill, I live in casper and there are a handful of Discos around here, but no Series that I know of. hell, if there were I'd probably be stalking them. And now that I see your website, I may just have to make a trip over there to visit sometime...

No, you don't have to swap tubs..... You can spot-weld on the line holds onto the tub, just a bit of fabrication work to get the bits you would need from a 3-door 109 merged onto the 5-door for it to work.

Edit:

You certainly could, everything is possible. But I was just looking to clarify that SW's traditionally never were intended for a ST.

Be quite a bit of work to do. Addressing the structural issues of the conversion, custom top and hoop set. Not really a worthwhile endeavor when a tub would be the easiest way. . .

Doesn't have to be an outright custom top, really, use the 3-door top and modify for the rear doors. Set it up to use a 3-door hoop-set, not a custom one.

I've seen several like this, it was much easier to convert to than to do a tub swap. Plus, it would keep you a five door, swapping the rear tub to a 3-door tub ends up w/ a different critter.... in that case, just trade for a 3-door in the first place.

That's the nice thing about a Series, decide what you want it to be, and you can make it such. It'd be easily worthwhile, if you're wanting a 109 5-door soft-top.

Its not that big of a deal. PA Blanchards has had a few for sale. Some place in FL was churning them out for a while too. Theres also a couple in the local club. There is even one on LRX right now. Stock tubs on every one I have seen. You might even be able to buy the tops for All Wheel trim. Theres a NADA truck in the local club that has removeable door tops on the middle and rear doors thats very cool.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look into it a bit more. As I understand it, I'd need to reinforce the tub some, probably connecting the b-pillars. I suppose the rear door would be a bit tougher to modify, but should be do-able.
thanks,
Greg

There used to be a lot of Series in Wyoming. I know for sure there was a dealership in Sheridan. My wife is from the Sheridan area, and her dad told me there used to be Series all over. They were pretty popular with the ranchers. My 1960 actually came out of Montana, just north of the Wyoming border. A lot of the old Series up there just got used up. I have bought a couple of old flat fender jeeps out of the Sheridan area, and they are also very used up (i.e. really hammered). The little 4wd rigs were great for running around the ranches and fixing fence and checking cows (I think I pulled about 10 pounds of fencing nails out of the crevices of my Series). I know there are still a couple of them sneaking around the area and I am sure there are still a few languishing in pastures and barns out on the surrounding ranches. There was a story in the Rovers North news a couple years ago about a kid from Sheridan that restored a Series with his dad and then drove it back east to go to school. Every time we go up there to visit I am always keeping my eyes open for a Series or another flatty that is needing rescue. I know there also used to be a red 109 that sat outside of Rock Springs, just south of I-80 and east of town as I recall. It was there for years and when I finally decided I was going to go ask about it, it was gone... snooze you lose...

There were a few dealers around here. They were sold as ranch trucks and they were used hard. The nice thing is that we dont rust here, we dont really get any moisture and they dont use anything but sand on the roads. The Red series I truck came from a local couple that used it to get back and forth to their mine. I know there are more trucks around but I have yet to find them... Its easy to get dirty looks when you run off the road looking behind some barn or wind break!

Rovers in the Wyoming - Montana area are very limited. There is a company in Billings, MT:

http://www.mountainrovers.com/

I didn't think it was still in business, but over the Holidays, I happened to drive past it and they have several series trucks and RR classics parked out front.

I was totally shocked to see it, yet no one else in the car even noticed the Rovers!

Soon after I got back from Africa and the Peace Corps, I aimed the 88" west for some skiing. By chance, I had an oil change at Craig Cross Texaco in 'downtown' Jackson. The owner said he used to be an LR dealer and put the best tune-up on it I ever had, especially considering the 5,000 foot elevation. He had the points, condenser and such on hand - which was a real surprise to me at the time, considering that this was, well, *Wyoming*.

A couple of months later, LR abandoned the US market entirely, which has got to be one of the stupidest corporate decisions of all times.

I've got some property in Cody. No rover there yet but I do get out there two or three times a year. I've seen a few other rovers in the four or five years I've been going there but only two series trucks in that time. Wish i could move out there now. I love the area.

I'd love to make some time to come down and visit on my next trip out.

Regarding the soft top on a 109 5 door discussion. I have both. In the summertime I pull the hard station wagon top off and put on a 3 door soft top with a tailgate in the back. I have not cut the middle doors down yet so the canvas top covers the tops of the middle doors, no big deal. I bent up a top bow to run between the two "B" pillars, I also made up spreader bar to run between the two rear hoops because the spacing was different from stock. Everything else is stock parts.
