Yet another BW T-case question...

Rover newbie, so forgive the redundance as I know this issue has been talked about ad-infinium. I have a fried viscous coupling in my new (to me) RRC LWB- which I've come to understand is somewhat customary!

What I'd like to know that I haven't seen on past threads, and since I'm away from my manual... What will I need aside from the salvage unit?

I've dropped the exhaust and frame x-member already and understand I'll need to fashion a transmission brace of some sort. I've looked at the exploded views in a couple of catalogs, is there no gasket between the transmission and t-case to be replaced? Seal for the output shaft? Anything like that I might need to order now, at the beginning of the week so I can knock this project out when I'm home at the weekend?

Thanks,
Gav

In case anybody else out there is looking for an afforable salvage unit I sourced a BW unit from ASU/MerAsian Auto Parts in Western Mich.- $499. Which seemed pretty good with a 90 day warranty...

Are you replacing just the VC or the entire t-case? If its just the VC, you can do that without t-case removal.

You're right, no gasket between the 2 units. I would definetely replaced those 2 seals (trans output, BW input) while it's apart.

Im kinda scared of used BWs....Have you thought about a LT-230? For $500-750, you can find a used one with the linkage and front driveshaft. ;)

BW woes

Yeah, I get the impression the BW unit is a tempermental beast. I'm definitely weary of the posibilities. Though an LT230 swap is in the forseeable future, I'm going to wait until I'm a bit more familiar with the machine before I start changing things up. Time is sort of critical at this point, and I'm all in favor of just being able to drop a replacement in.

As for the VC change- I thought of that, but $500 for a salvage t-case with a 3 mo. wrnty vs. $900 for a replacement VC didn't make too much sense for me right now. I figure if I'm feeling particularly industrious I can rebuild the BW and sell it/trade it for the LT230 and associated necessities. Which are...

front prop shaft from either an 87-88 RR or a D1 (longer?)
output shaft from 87-88 RR or a D1 (also longer)
shift linkage and stub
appropriate E-brake assmbly
appropriate frame mount

Is that it?

Thanks for the input!

Why not take the VC out of the used case and swap it into your old one? You should probably inspect it anyway. The splines are known to wear pretty bad. Although with a 90 day warranty I guess it's no loss except for time. But it is easier to swap in the VC than the whole Tcase.

Just a thought.

FWIW, I just did the same to mine this weekend, and I am going the LT230 route. Better idea offroad, especially in the rocks. I also ate the spider gears in the rear diff, so I have several repairs going on at the same time this month.

I agree! I put in a LT230 and the truck has done a hell of lot better on rocks.

I still have the viscous coupling if you want to contact me about it.

Also did the LT230 conversion. Doesn't work the steering box as hard since the VC was always pretty tight as well as the other offroad stuff mentioned above.
