Yet still the noise is there and no tach

I know some of you have heard this....but bare with me... I am not sure what to do.

Ok....here is the deal.... there is a high pitch noise (like a belt that needs to be replaced or is off) and it sounds only when I give it gas. I have no tachometer at all. For a while there the tachometer would go in and out as the sound did. No the tachmeter is constantly out and the noise is constant. I thought it was the alternator, because that is where the noise was coming from, and it turns out the alternator was going bad, although that did not get rid of the noise.

There is also quite a bit of residue on the alternator clutch and other parts, which is from the belt itself. Now...I have checked the belt along with many of my guy friends and they see that the belt is on track.

I am thinking that it is a barring or something going out. Which stops turning and therefore causes the belt to rub. As for the Tachometer the hell if I know.

I need some advice. Tomorrow the land rover dealer has finally fit me in their schedule in order for me to pay $76.00 for a diagnose. I decided to not let them do an actually (electrical) diagnostic test because I do not think it is electrical.

I am waiting on the Discovery Manual (that I have ordered; the $150.00 bible for the Disco) which I am sure if I can see something to compare (a roadmap of some sort) then I could try to fix.

What do you think? Need advice.

Is there a tach cable or is the rpm gauge digitally driven? If its a cable similar to a speedo cable, its probably snapped inside the sheath and you hear it spinning away, or the threads have come undone or something similar.

If everything else works fine, that would PROBABLY be whats going on.

It is a 99 series I Disco (sorry I forgot to mention that). But the RPM gauge is not digital. That makes sense but where would the noise be coming from near the front of the engine? It all happens at the same time. Noise= no tachometer. I just don't get it because the noise sounds like it is coming from the belt that turns on the alternator, clutch and others.

Alice, Do that bearing rebuild on the tensioner like we discussed in the other thread. Now that you have mentioned the residue on the pulleys, replace the belt also when you get the tensioner fixed. I think that will put you back on the road to success. ;)

ok so you guys think I should hold off on the shop repair and try this myself. I do have a friend that is savy with trucks and repairs, although he has not dealt with a Land Rover other than mine. I think between his tools and the two of us I can get this fixed. What do you think? Should I not bring it into the shop tomorrow, try this and if it doesn't work then take it in?

That's what I would do. Use the dealership if all else fails. Any idea when you two are going to get going on it? I wouldn't put it off any longer than necessary. When the tach is not working and it is squealing, it's safe to say the alternator isn't charging the battery. You don't want to end up stranded somewhere, especially with your boy. So if your friend can't get to it for another week or so maybe it would wise to get it in to the dealer.

He said that I could use shop whenever I needed. But with Thanksgiving and we will see. I talked to my dad and he seems to think I can fix it. So if all else fails I think I am going to call around and get a good price on the tensioner or whatever you call it and try that. I am doing this by trial and error but I am not sure what else to do because I know that it will be pretty expensive to get the dealer to fix plus I won't learn anything. With one income I am scared I won't be able to afford it if the dealer touches it. I don't know...geez. I just want to fix it. I am dying to dive in there and l do it myself really and I think I am beginning to do the normal female thing of rationalizing too much...lolol. I should just do it. I think, hehe  ;)

You can do it. Probably just one or two bolts holding the tensioner on. I am no mechanic myself, but my truck has not been to the dealership yet. I'll bet it's under an hours worth of work.

Thanks Stroud I think that is what I needed to hear. I get a little intimidated on things sometimes even though I know I can do it. lol. You have been a great deal of help and I thank you.

No problem. Glad to be of service. These trucks don't seem to be tougher to work on than any other brand. Once you get it running right, then you can start on the fun stuff, like lift kits and off road gear. Just beware, soon the truck will be your "other" baby, just as costly and demanding as a child. ;)
