Yikes - New Brakes costs

I have a 2004 Disco with 22k miles. Brakes are down to almost nothing and the ABS light is coming on intermttently. Dealer just quoted me $645 for new pads/labor/etc. Is this consistent with what other people have paid? At this cost I'm looking in to doing it myself.

Since I haven't done it before and I'm not as experienced as a lot of you, I was wondering if this is something I should go ahead and attempt myself? If so, should I get parts through Land Rover?

Wow, I was too busy two weeks ago to do my own brakes so I just had an independent shop do them. New Pads, Rotors, and Labor for $605.

I swear I replied here, before...

This is a pretty easy DIY job on D2. Should be able to save yourself about 300 if you put in a couple hours effort.

usually with that mileage you can turn the roters on a brake machine.Save yourself some money and buy just the pads from an autoparts they have listings for that and have an Ind garage to the job and you should save at least 300 and its done by a shop.

Do it yourself if you feel comforatble. Brakes are simple. Don't do it if you have no mechanical ability. (there thats my wavier of liablilty) :)

A quick check on parts prices: Rovers North as Genuine for about $500 all four corners (pads, rotors); DAP offers all the parts, OEM, non-LR, for $299; they also have a HD maybe-better-than-stock option at $599: kevlar pads and slotted drilled rotors. As the old saying goes, ya pays yer money, ya takes yer chances....
Me, being cheap, I would go the DAP OEM route and DIY.

Buckeye and anybody wanting help. Change the location on your preferences from some stupid made up place to the city you are actually in. Somebody may actually offer to help you fix whatever you need fixed for food and beer........ Just an idea, Rover people are usually pretty helpful.
