On the road with the Scout.

My dogs (Mac (GSP) and Jackson (Eng Setter)) as I was getting ready to take Mac out hunting on a trial basis. We rescued Mac about a year and half ago (he's now ~ 4yr), but I couldn't take him out last year because I blew my knee out.

He didn't do too bad. Flushed a grouse in our 1.5 hour hunt. He was definitely using his nose, now I think I just need to get him to understand what it is we are looking for (birds vs deer).

Jackson was not happy with me today. He had to stay home because he is on injured reserve. He's a coffee fiend; pulled my wife's coffee mug off the bathroom counter shattering it and got a deep cut on his front left pad (black tape). No hunting for him till Dec.

Thanks. The setter is getting old (11) and is slowing down; he's slowed down a lot in the last year. I'm going to be finding his replacement in a couple of years....He's "my" dog - follows me everywhere....it'll be sad when the time comes.

This GSP just came to us. A friend of my wife's called her a couple of times one week and asked if she could let him out after work. After the third day, she realized he had moved out into his girlfriends appt, and had basically abandoned the dog. That day she brought him home and we were going to find him a home, but my daughter fell in love with him, so we kept him. Turns out he had worms, but a deworming, and he's been great. A very sweet dog, and very docile. In fact, I was afraid he would be gun shy, but today in the woods I fired off a shot when he was working - just glanced at me and kept going. I think he'll become a hunter yet.

On aircraft the Autopilot is always on and running.

The pilots just engage it by pushing a few buttons and it takes control.

on hunting dogs the hunt is always on and running ,you the hunter just have to engage
it, they know it all already ,they just need to know you want to do it .
Hes already a hunter he needs to know that you are too.

Have fun they are both beautifull.

Yep, that's what I was hoping for with the GSP. He's definately got it. Now it's just time to teach him what to look for. I'll take him out for more grouse later this season, and will probably take him to a pheasant game ranch in Jan/Feb where I know there will be birds out.

The Setter - you might be old enough to remember this...he's based off of the Ryman Setter line. Big, plodding close hunting dogs; perfect for grouse. Here's a write up on it. The dog I grew up with was a true Ryman; my dad bought him six months after I was born. My setter came from a guy who bred the Ryman-type in upstate NY (Bliss, NY). I'm not a big fan of DeCoverly Kennels; seems too much like a puppy mill to me (dozens of dogs available anytime!).

When I was looking for him, I talked to the widow of a famous grouse hunter/writer from WVa (can't remember his name), and she didn't have much to say about DeCoverly Kennels, but had good things to say about the guy in NY. I waited a year and a half for that dog, and it was worth it.

I remember now! It was George Bird Evans' wife. Great writer about upland hunting. He breed his own Ryman-like line: Old Hemlock

Here are my newly adopted african dogs from my mother-in-law:
