I'm a new DS2 owner :) However, I've two concerns about a few noises its making. Yes, I know I should probably get use to a few noises, but I just want to keep a knowledgable eye of her.

- I seem to get a slow oscillating whine from the transmission when moving slowily (<15MPH). Is this usual for a 2000 DS2?

- Road/tire noise gets really noticable above 75MPH. It still has stock Wrangler HP (16") tires (30000 mile). Are these generally noisy on the DS2? Or is this normal?

1. never noticed a whine in the transmission - you should still be under the warranty - take it into the dealer

2. Those Wrangler tires suck - I spoke to the dealer and he said they don't last. Yours are probably cupping - mine did. I just dealt with it but once i hit a screw and the tire was shot i replaced all four with michelins (sp?)LTX - man o man did I notice a difference. Did this at 35K.

1. WHINE IS PROBABLY FORM THE TRANSFER CASE.SOME NOISE IS NORMAL DUE THE GEAR DRIVEN DESIGN USED. THINK OF THIS NOISE AS A GOOD THING BECAUSE YOU WILL PROBABLY GET MORE LIFE OUT OF THIS THAT A CHAIN DRIVEN DESIGN THAT IS IN MOST VEHICLES ESP IF THE TRUCK IS USED HEAVY OFF-ROAD.

2. THE WRANGLER TIRES ARE SO BAD THAT GOODYEAR HAS A BULLETIN OUT ON TIRES CUPPING AND THEY WILL PRO-RATE THE TIRES AND INSTALL A NEW TYPE OF TIRE THAT I FORGOT THE NAME OF BUT IT STARTS WITH AN "F". THE GOODYEAR DEALERS HAVE BEEN VERY HARD TO GET TO HONOR THIS BULLETIN SO YOU MAY HAVE TO BE PERSISTANT. WORD OF ADVISE, EVEN THOUGH LAND ROVER DOES NOT REC TIRE ROTATION HAVE FOUND THAT PERFORMING A ROTATE EVERY SERVICE WILL EXTEND TIRE LIFE AND REDUCE CUPPING.

I've heard a rumor that a few D2's left the factory with the center diff lock engaged. If it is engaged, you will get a whine much like what you mentioned.

Take it to a gravel parking lot and turn the wheels hard to the right. Put the •••••• in drive and drive it slowing in a tight circle. If the front tires scrub, then your center diff lock is engaged. Have the dealership unlock it for you.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Thanks guys. I think I'll take it to the dealer and get rid of those Goodyears.

BTW: I've heard that all tires should be changed at once on 4x4s. Any truth in this?

IF THE CENTER DIFF LOCK WAS ENGAGED IT WOULD HAVE BROKEN SOMETHING BY NOW BEING A 2000 MODEL. ALSO THE VEHICLE STILL HAS A DIFF LOCK SWITCH AND A LIGHT ON THE DASH THAT WILL COME ON. THE LAST VEHICLE I SAW THAT DROVE AROUND IN DIFF LOCK ON PAVEMENT FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME BROKE THE REAR DIFF RING GEAR TEETH OFF AND DESTROYED THE RUBBER COUPLER FOR THE DRIVESHAFT. THIS SHOULD ALSO SHOW HOW STRONG THE T-BOX IS

Doesn't seem to be the diff lock (no scrubbing when turning on a loose surface). Listened to it a little more this weekend, and the noise it more of a oscillating low whirring noise, than a whine. The speed of the oscillation increases with speed until its just part of the engine/transmission noise.

Have to wait to this coming week to check it with the dealer.

I have the exact same noise on my 2000 DII at low speeds. Mostly noticeable until about 20 kmh then seems to fade into background engine noise. Always sounds like my truck is revving high at low speeds even though the tach is only about 1500.

I have a Disco 96, after 160,000km I have a high pitch whine on the transfer case (was not there before), I had the bearings on the transfer case changed and the whine stopped....for 400 km then its back again?
Any ideas what I should do? Can one find used transfer cases for sale? Whats the worst that could happen if I do nothing?
Thanks.

The t-box in these vehicles are noisy from the factory. If you went to the dealer tommorrow and drove a new disco you would find a gear whine in most of those also. I would just leave well enough alone.

Hey folks, My name is Armando and I own a '98 Discovery.

I got a '98 Disco with automatic transmission that decided it doesn't want to drive forwards any longer, although it happily will drive in reverse.

While leaving a gas station I engaged drive and drove out normally then suddenly realized that I wasn't getting any power to the wheels... no cluncks or anything to indicate obvious mechanical failure - drive simply became ineffectual.

When engaging reverse I get the usual friendly clunk (I used to get that when engaging drive).

I played around with the transfer case engaging high and low and it appears to be working normally in reverse but again D-3-2-1 continue to be inopperational.

As a possible hint... the transmission had been experiencin a problem "sticking" in 1st gear when cold. but this problem would sort itself out after the truck warmed up.

Hoping you might give me some advice before I take it to a dealer - the way someone takes their pet lamb to the slaughter house.

Thanks in advance for your words of wosdom,
Armando

Read this very useful post from Chris Browne addressing the 1-2 shift hesitation which I was experiencing... Anyone have anything in addition they would be kind enough to offer?

Thanks Again! Armando

"That happens especially immediately after a service or fluid is drained as dirt gets caught in the governor valve body.
Lack of servicing too. It should go away a few days after a service.
Short of removing and cleaning the govenor valve body consider the following.
Since only 3-4 quarts come out every time you drain and replace the fluid, 30% of the fluid in the box is 93k miles old assuming all services done per schedule.
Have your garage drain, refil, run 30 secs, repeat. After about six times, you will have replaced about 90% of the fluid you have in there now.
This is best done in association with the t.ranny filter replacement, replace the filter on the last go around. "

Gents found some more information in the archives:

http://www.discoweb.org/archive2001/messages/1774/282.html?987425708

I know initially what to expect... I guess the question now becomes could the transmission be destroyed? Again there was no major mechanical noise and when I shift down basically nothing happens. No mechanical noise from the transmission although the engine does accelerate slightly.

Thanks for the help, I generally believe dealers out here are mone sucking scum and I'm short on funds for a new transmission - I fully expect that to be their response based on previous interactions.
