I have a 96 Disco with an automatic transmisson and 93k on it. Over the past few days I've noticed a pronounced hesitation or lag when the transmission shifts from first to second. Fluid level is normal and all other shifts are normal.

The lag or hesitation is more pronounced after the vehilce has sat for a while and the transmission is cold. Once the tranmission has had a chance to warm-up the hesitation goes away. Any advice would be most appreciated.

That happens especially immediately after a service or fluid is drained as dirt gets caught in the governor valve body.
Lack of servicing too. It should go away a few days after a service.
Short of removing and cleaning the govenor valve body consider the following.
Since only 3-4 quarts come out every time you drain and replace the fluid, 30% of the fluid in the box is 93k miles old assuming all services done per schedule.
Have your garage drain, refil, run 30 secs, repeat. After about six times, you will have replaced about 90% of the fluid you have in there now.
This is best done in association with the t.ranny filter replacement, replace the filter on the last go around.
