Ok, Looking to replace or check my stat on my 2001 Disco. It has about 14K miles on it. The temp gauge is starting to creep up to the red level & once even hitting red while parked in the drive way. It does however take a while for it to do this. During driving I can turn the heater on & it seems to lower the temp. I checked the coolant level ok had to top it off after it boiled over. Hoses look good no coolant leak anywhere. My question is where exactly is the stat located & how can i tell if it's opening & closing properly? TIA |

John, Since you're still in warranty - I'd get it dealer checked - especially since the radiators are a know fault and are replaced often (very often) Regardless - thermostat is in water neck in front of engine on the intake manifold. Upper radiator hose is clamped to water neck. To check, you'd need to pull T-stat out and then put it in water on the stove - check to see if it opens and if it does - at what temperature (use wife's kitchen thermometer - sure to make you very popular with your better half! ) Hell, I've got half my wife's kitchen utensils in the garage- LOL Seriously though - you have a good warranty - take advantage of it. Don't risk overheating the aluminum 4.0 - the heads do not like it one bit. Bill |

My disco II had the radiator replaced - take it in and let them do it under warranty. I know a mechanic at the dealership personally and he said the factory installed raditors suck - very prone to leaking. |

John - from what you are describing, I would say that it is highly unlikely to be the thermostat. I agree with others - get that radiator checked by the dealership. |

yep. jens D2 had a small leak in the rad. the dealer even said they are shit compared to the D1 rads. and they cost about 1/2 of the D1's too. they said they go through them like dental floss. |
