Please help the newcomer. After I put in the new o2 sensor, how do I reset the code and check engine light? I see the reset on the 'tech' section of discoweb, but that appears to be for the emission maintenance. Do I do the same thing?

thanks everyone, I have a 96' 4.0 disco.

Go to autozone and they will do it for free, or it will go away on its own after a while if it is no longer throwing a code.

autozone for free? Sounds easy, I didn't think they would touch a Rover.

thanks!

Yeah, they offer free code readings on anything that uses the OBDII (including your rover) and you can clear the code with the reader too.

Unfortunately Autozone doesn't clear the codes in some states, including Wahington, Oregon and Cali. A few paper presidents might do the trick though... You can buy these readers yourself for about $100 for the cheap ones (same ones Autozone uses). I paid $130 for a new one off eBay using Buy-it-now. Figured I'll be running into more of this later so I'd rather do it myself and be able to clear the warning lights.

Auto Zone will read it, but won't clear it. Just leave it, and it will go out on its own after, like, 30 starts or something

Well they have always cleared mine, maybe I'm just lucky

I just finished screwing around with my O2 sensor. My light went out after about four or five days. Just be patient.

Will an ABS light go off after the problem is fixed? I replaced my brake switch after I couldn't shift from park and one day before that the ABS light came on. I assume the ABS light came on because of the switch, but its still on after replacing it. The code reader didn't throw any ABS codes. Will the light just eventually go off?

I'm not sure about the ABS.

ABS and check engine are two different things of course. if your ABS is on you most likely have a bad sensor at one of the wheels. or even check a fuse for the ABS. that can do it too.
check engine lights will eventually reset themselves, but not always. they typically have to 'cycle' once for them to clear.

The SERVICE ENGINE light (left side of cluster) resets after a battery disconnect (positive terminal). Make certain that you have your radio code at hand before doing so!

Good luck with your Rover project.

Erik is right - undo the battery. But I'm curious as to the positive terminal comment?

I did disconnect the battery and the light was still on! It was on immediately, with no delay, which makes me think it never was cleared. Also, I noticed my preset radio stations still were set, but I did have to key in the radio code & the clock was at 12:00?

Help the lost and confused!

ok. lets get this clear. are we talking about the YELLOW check engine light or the RED service engine light? two totally different things. diconnecting the battery will do nothing for the check engine light. that has to be done by clearing the codes via an OBD II scan tool or letting the truck cycle and resetting itself. or of course maybe some black electrical tape!!

I'm refering to the Yellow check engine light. I didn't know there were 2 different ones. I have not had the pleasure of seeing the red service engine light come on yet. When I see that one, I guess I better pull over!! (wait, I bet that is what the article in the tech section resets. Ah, yes, maybe now I understand why that confused me..)

I like the black electric tape idea......but I will have to make another trip to autozone and figure this out.

I think of my service engine soon light as more of a Engine Running light:)

Actually mine comes on when the gas is less than about 1/3 tank, and goes off when I fill up again! Ah the rover mysteries go on...!
