Ok, This liberty thread got me thinking. My GF wants a new rig. Doesn't love the looks of the RR, thinks the D1 and D2 are OK but wants something Bigger. We tote around 3 kids! WHat about a mid 90's Landcruiser? They have Solid Axles, lockers on some from the Factory, and decent aftermarket support. With a nice Roof Rack, Good Tires and a 2" lift it should be able to go most places a Disco can. (I'm sure departure angle is a big problem though). When did they finally put a REAL motor in the LandCruiser (newer bodystyle that came out in early 90's) I know the first few years were pathetically underpowered. Thanks Todd |

The ideal Cruisers are 1993 to 1997 FZJ80. The Inline 6 puts out 212hp and 300+ ft lbs. Available electric lockers front and rear, high-pinion front diff. The 93-95 models use a from a Japanese-market bus which is virtually indestructible; 1996-97 use a variation of the 4Runner/truck A340-series . 1991-92 have the 160hp I6. 1998 is the IFS V8 FZJ100. I was looking for a FZJ80 before buying the Disco. For a vehicle that size, the interior is incredibly small / cramped up. Every one I drove had a driveline clunk which I couldn't get an answer on. They are beasts, no doubt. There is a huge aftermarket, and the axles/birfields will stand up to significant abuse. Good luck with your shopping. joe |

Underpowered?! The LC had a 4.5 liter straight six until late '90's, when they put in the V8. That straight six is pretty beefy if you ask me, and much easier to keep up than the 32 valve Lexus V8. The LC will go just about anyplace our Discos do, and to boot is better on the road and vastly more reliable. The LC has only two disadvantages -- much less personality, and about double the cost of a comparable Disco-Pig. If you can afford it, there's really nothign wrong with the LC. |

Only draw back on the LandCruisers I see is the bad departure angle and that spare tire but that can be fixed. And while they have a reputation for being solid they are also plagued with electrical problems from what I hear. And anyone know what the wheelbase is? Size would be a huge issue on some of the trials I run on the east coast as the D2 is about the limit as it is. But from my experience in Colorado and UT the size there might less of an issue (asside from wheelbase). I find humor in the Lexus comment since most people I talk to call a Lexus a Toyota. Kinda like the camry that was used for the platform for the ES300 that was used for the RX300 and in turn used for the Highlander. |

I saw a gold LandCruiser at Killington this year. I'm not sure of the year, but I would guess it was around the mid-nineties. It was pretty nice looking with stock lockers. The truck had a really awesome set of swampers on it too. I was very impressed with how the truck looked and with how it handled the trails we were on. Not that the trails were that hard, but the truck appeared to just walk up anything before it, even on sections that some of the rovers had trouble on. gp |

Interestingly, in Australia at least you can get a solid axle on the current model LandCruiser 100 (same look as US model). I wish Toyota sold the 78 model here. A lot like the Defender, comes in a Troop Carrier version with diesel, snorkel, and hand throttle. When I was there in '97-98 the LC had a better reputation as a reliable workhorse than the Land Rovers. |

Cuisers are awesome trucks, but if you are towing kids, the 7th seats in the back of a D2 are best, really easy to get into (even for a small adult) and actually pretty comfortable, and much safer than the other 7th seats that are out there. With the head restraints and three point belts. The 78's are even more rare than the D-110's and harder to get. Just remember, Japanese cars, even the big luxury trucks, drive like Japanese cars. The Rovers drive like BMW's comparatively. LC's are very precise and straight forward feeling when driving, they take corners the same way they take a straight road. Drive a Toyota Corolla and you have driven an Land Cruiser. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

i have a buddie that wheels his fj80 with us it (as all 95"s) has the lockers. it goes pretty well. tends to make everthing look easy right up till it gets stuck. it is na great truck and is in the class of a disco in all ways. the inline 6 is the better motor.IMHO also they get real shitty MPG justy like the rovers. if they do have draw backs, the wheel wells get banged up and look shitty, and they are just plain vannilla as far as personality. |

one more thing it seams to be the ultimate cop-out vehichle? not only my buddie but pretty much all the ones I see on the trail as well. All the owners are these wishy washy kinda people who when peer pressure kicks in and trys to get them to cross a hole or climb an obstacle they come back with "oh I'm hear to watch" or "I'v got stock tires" or "I'v always wanted to build a old landrover jeep". I know I'm making a huge generalization here but I have really seen this a buncha times and laugh at the sociological side of it. I mean how many tits out trail truck FJ80's have you seen? |

I have never seen tits on a truck...I think their is probably a law against it. And no doubt this thread will nose dive with "trucks with tits" images...that is just one more reason to like this board. As far as Todds' question, I agree with the majority of the posts...it'll do everything our Disco's will do and with much less maintenance cost and also hold its value better. As far as putting things in motion...I seem to recall the early 80's had the traditional (aka part time 4wd), then in 93 they went to the "fool time" 4wd and added the center diff (w/lock)option and some even had front and rear locker options. |

Thom, there's a veeerry nice FJ60 I drive by every now and then, with 33" mudders, full ConFerr job on the roof, ARB bumper with some winch, and seemingly a bunch of other goodies. not that i wheel more than 1% of my trucks' mileage, but i've never ever seen this TLC out. nor even dusty. peter |

For the vintage referred to, I believe the wheelbase is 113". Approach and departure angles can be modified but I've seen a few modified ones leaving behind exhaust parts due to poor breakover angle and lack of protection of stock exhaust. From underneath, the suspension on mid-90's LC FJ80 is very roveresque looking. Get her a D110!! |

One thing I will say about the mid 90's Land Cruiser is that the chassis seems to be a carbon copy of the RRC. Take a look underneath one, and tell me they didn't reverse engineer a RR. The shocks are interchangeable with RR/Disco, but just about 10mm longer...coincidence?? Also I have investigated using LC springs on a RR, but aparently there is a difference. Randall |

Musky, Funny thing, my neighbor has a mid 90's fj80. It's all done up with a 3" lift, 33" tires arb front bumper, kaymar rear and safari snorkle. When I was thinking about buying my rover I talked to him and said "get a fj, much better offroad than a discovery, besides you never see a discovery offroad." Well I couldn't find a fj that wasn't way over priced so I got my rover. So all summer I'm out getting my truck dirty and never see a speck of dust on his. So I ask him, hey you want to go sometime? He said "I can't go, my trucks not set up for the trails around here." I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. So I ask him where he goes, he said Moab, I said great lets go. He said he needs a winch first. Later at a party at my house, I tell his wife that they should go with my wife and I to Moab for some wheeling. She said "oh he really doesn't take it offroad, he's afraid of breaking it because it costs so much." I just laughed, I guess he thinks I'm one of those crazy rover people. Andy 95 d1 slc ut |

Todd, I owned a '77 fj-40 right before my '95 Disco. I dreamed of owning a mid 90's fj-80 but I couldn't rationalize paying the kind of money they go for. I love my Disco but my '77 40 in all the while I owned it, 2 yrs, didn't break down nearly as much as my dealer maintained Disco in the first 6 months of ownership. If I had to do it again, and had kids, I'd go with the fj. I'd rather make scheduled monthly payments than to have the "out of the blue" expense of the endless repairs on my disco! Like I said I LOVE my disco but if I have to live on Ramen noodles for a week to put Another Alternator in the disco, so be it. But if I had a wife and kids to feed, that's another story. Either way you win, both rock! Now keep in mind, I work for a living and don't have time to wheel my truck nearly as much as the other "professionals" on this board. I get out maybe once a month and that's usually only in the east coast. So if you fit this profile as well, either truck should suit you. But if you live in Moab and/or consider wheeling a profession and not a hobby, then I'd wait for some of the other like types to chime in. Discoweb has some real quality individuals who've been around the sport for many many years and are quick to offer a experienced opinion and humble advice. Unfortunately, they also seem to have a few Assholes who've managed to master the art of offroading in only a few short years!!! These types are quick to criticize and connote offroad prowess with masculinity. They've obviously either forgoten their last kick in the fuckin teeth or have never had the very humbling experience. Either way disregard any negative shit you hear on here and good luck with your decision. Happy Holidays |

Musky - there's a guy in my club down at Virginia Tech that has an '80. it's set up on 35's, ARB bumper, safari snorkel, etc. he does wheel it. i was riding along when he bent his tie-rod into a "U". made driving the rest of the trail fun. it's currently undergoing a heart tranplant though. |

Andy, this is exactly what I'm talking about! why is it? man give me any truck with 4wd and I'm looking for low range and twisting it down the nearest trail. these guys talk about offroad and all but yet just want to watch from outside the fish tank? tell your neighbor not to feel bad he's not alone. Jroc, what advice are you giving todd? should he buy a disco or a fj80? when he wheels them the same will they hold up the same. how will the resale be when the big bulging fender flares get beatup on the fj80?, I know my comment sounded like I was bashing the fj80 but I wasent. I was just remarking on the strange sociological niche of watchers that are attracted to these vehicles. Ivan Ironman stewart preruns desert courses in very stock fj80's, they are great trucks and in the right hands are very capable dead stock. but like g wagons and civilian hummers most will do more watching then doing. sorry buts thats just how I see it from my little corner of the web wheeling world thom |

Jroc I have to ask who are you flaming, me? I'm not saying I know anymore than anyone else or that I have a bigger dick than everyone else. All I was saying is there is an awesome FJ80 at my neigbors house who doesn't do shit with it but drive to work. I make fun of him to his face for it. I get my truck out once or twice a month, I have done some hard trails, but also I'll drive just plain old dirt roads and have fun. Everytime I've gone to Moab I have gone to mountain bike or rock climb first, I wheel most of the time to get to remote camp sites. I went this fall with my fj neighbor and a friend of his to moab. His friend also has a fj80 with factory lockers and a mild lift which he drove. I suggested some remote camp sites that required wheeling to. We drove the Merrimak and Monitor trail, he wanted to stop because he got uncomfortable at few spots. I thought it made him a smart driver because I wasn't afraid to admit he was uncomfortable, never once did I think "what a wimp". Maybe I'm stupid and going to get myself killed offroad, but I picked my discovery and looked at fj's because they are bigger than a wrangler and not some jacked up testosterone f350 superduty hey look at me truck. I was a car guy till I bought a nissan, I wanted a better offroad vehicle which led me to LR. So I always had issues with people lifting a truck 6" to drive to work. If you want a truck fine get one, but if you want to lift it to compensate for "short" comings, don't expect not to get shit for it. Like you said don't listen to everyone on this board and Happy Holidays Andy Thoma 95 D1 slc ut |

Todd By the way if you can find a FJ80 that has reasonable miles and isn't overpriced, buy it. They are really nice trucks with a good aftermarket and good reputations. The problem I had had when I was looking for one was I could buy a rover with less miles for less money. I think if I where to do it all over again, I would have looked harder for RRC's and FJ80's. The FJ60 or 65 are great, but here in utah they all seemed to be rusted to pieces, salt seems to kill pre 90's toyotas. I'd suggest finding something like this web site for FJ's and ask about where to look for rust on fj 60's or 65's. andy thoma |

THanks Guys, I appreciate all the feedback. Sounds Like everyone agrees I'm NOT CRAZY for thinking about getting an LC. I'm very surprised at all the positive feedback. Everyone is being, so, Adult about this. :-) Wow. We looked at the Liberty but it got voted out quickly. NOt enough room, funny looking. We considered a Grand Cherokee but its still not reaaly roomy and I'd rather get a second discovery over a Grand Cherokee I think. The only other choice was the LandCruiser. I'd LOVE a 2002' TD5 110 but alas, I'm in the USA. :-) ANd its a little $$$$$$$. So I agree, 93-97 would be the year. Big I-6, decent power, live axles. Now I just need to find one to drive and look at. I've never even driven one! It would rarely see serious offroad duty but it would see trail duty and maybe a trip to Moab for some biking/climbing. And towing the boat. Both jobs the Disco can do quite well but I want both vehicles to be capable. Thanks everyone. Todd (off to search some LandCruiser sites) |

Ok, this thread definitely hits home for me. I'm currently in this exact situation. Right now I have an fj60 that I just bought on the east coast (I live in San Diego, temporarily stationed on EC) and it has a little bit of rust but nothing strutural compromising. The last few months I've been working on it as much as possible and just put an OME lift on and it made a huge difference. You might be asking why the hell am I here at D-web. I've always liked LRs ever since I went in my first offroad trip overseas when I was about 17. So naturally I wanted one but couldn't afford one while in college. Now, my future wife is in the market for a new car. I want something safe and i won't be caught dead driving a mini-van, pontiac vibe or anything of the sort. So, naturally I'm looking at a D2 for her, and adding a few mods for me ;) and her! But since the purchase of my FJ I've caught the off-roading bug. My dilemma is deciding whether a Land Rover and Land Cruiser in the same drive way might be over kill. I'm torn between the two Landys. While I don't plan on putting a lot of cash into the 60 I do plan on stepping up to the FJ80 as soon as the 60 dies. I glad to see most of you respect the LC for what it is. So if you are on the trail in a few years a see a dude in an fj80 and a hot blonde in a d2 you'll know its me and my wife...what's could be better than going to both the LR and LC trail rides!!! Share the love people!!! Seriously, if you want to see the best fj80 site I have seen check out http://www.sleeoffroad.com A little sample |

Anza-Borrego's good, but it is either scenic or difficult, rather than both. Los Coyotes is both at the same time. both these places are in nearly two hours' drive from San Diego - and San Bernardino Mountains are in two and a half. So, whenever in doubt, head out to Big Bear. peter |

Andy, No, I wasn't flaming you at all! I actually thought your story was funny. There are ALOT of really cool people on here that offer sincere and much appreciated help to people in need. Overall Discoweb is a really cool place. But there are a few real Dicks who seem to sign on just to give people shit! Opinions are great, and it's nice to have a forum where ADULTS can discuss different opinions about a hobby. But some people seem to take it WAY too far and disrespect a person because of a difference of opinion. Now I'm not a tough guy, but I am quick to provide some unscheduled dental work to ANYONE who is Disrectful towards me, and I DO make house calls! Bully's need to be confronted because they often mistaken kindness for weakness. And Muskyman, The advice I'm giving Todd is that he should take frequency of repairs into consideration. I think my Disco is the perfect combination of onroad comfort and offroad prowess, but it's at the expense of reliability. It hasn't proved to be a lemon, but it's far from reliable. Either way, I think for the weekend warrior they're both very capable vehicles, with the obvious lean towards my favorite. Muskyman, you're one of the people who's opinions I admire very much. You're a very opinionated person but at the same time very respectfull. You appear to be very experienced in the sport of offroading but don't act like you invented the fucking sport! Kudos to you, and Happy Holiday's to all. And sorry for the confusion Andy, hope this cleared it up. |

I say go for the TOYOTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just do what I did tonight. I got rid of my f@#$ing Disco buy a Chevy. Wasn't even paid off yet. Couldn't wait to get rid of the thing I don't regret it a bit. Biggest piece of $hit I've ever owned!! Goddamn thing couldn't get out of its own way, ate gas like it was going out of style and generally leaked like a sieve. The first and last LR I will ever own. You guys have been great helping me fix the thing (every couple of weeks it seems) and I don't have to mail order my parts. Good riddance...........hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha |

Enjoy. ---Norm |

Sorry I missed out on this thread .... gotta remember to take my laptop on the next trip. As the owner of 2 LC's (BJ41 & LJ78) and a Disco1, and numerous friends with 80 series LC's, I would say go with the LC. The Disco and LJ/BJ70 are actually a really good match for each other with similar performance and handling, but Toyota wins in the reliability area. However, if you get an LC with the Turbo Diesel (do the sell these in the states), plan on having the Turbo rebuilt at 100,000-120,000 miles. |

That's too bad. IMHO, the Turbo Diesels that Toyota put's in the Land Cruisers are some of the best engines that they make. Anybody know why the car companies aren't importing Turbo Diesels? I'm guessing emissions, however, given the increased performance and fuel economy, you would think it would offset the emissions issue. |

Im a little late here but I HAVE to add my 2c. Cruisers are awesome. Its not by accident that every minesite here runs HJ75 traybacks. They aint too comfortable but are virtually unbreakable. The 80 series here is like Corollas, theyre EVERYWHERE. Huuge aftermarket options, easy to drop chevs into etc etc. The departure angle really isnt too bad with a bit of lift and putting the spare up behing the tailgate. The turbo deisels are also sensational. But, every bastard has one, the V8s are too expensive to buy still and they dont ride as nicely off road till the 100 series came out. My Land Cruiser buddys call mine a Land Rover Recovery....gits.. |
