I was driving home tonight and all of the sudden my CD started skipping. it sounded like it was shorting out. I then noticed that the SRS light came on the dash. My Tachometer stopped working...... luckily I made it home. What the heck!!!! Any ideas?

a local shop sold you a new alt. for $300 or something rebuilt..

I had my alt (100 amp rating but puts out constant 125) rebuilt at a place for $105.00...

AHHH... Well I replaced the alternator and it worked fine, for about 5 minutes of driving. All of the sudden the EXACT same things happened. Radio goes out, Lights dim, SRS light goes on, Tachometer stops working. Whats the deal? I just put in a new alternator. Could it be the battery? Or some other expensive electrical problem? Any ideas/suggestions/whatever would be EXTREMLEY helpful. Thanks.

ok, you may have a short somewhere. better find it before your new alternator gets crispy or major disaster happens.

How do I find the short? What are some steps? I really dont want to take it back the dealer.

I think all this happened when I drove through a puddle the other night. It was right after that when all this happened. What would you suspect?

I AM ONLY GUESSING BUT I SUSPECT A PATAGONIAN TOOTHFISH GOT FLUNG UP ONTO YOUR UNDERCARRIAGE AS YOU TRAVERSED THE PUDDLE AND HAS CHEWED THE INSULATION OFF OF YOUR MAIN LOOM AND HAS CREATED A SHORT.

ANYWAYS________

I put in a crappy alternator. The guy at the shop says that it works for 5 mins and then stops. So Looks like I'll fork out a little more money and get a decent one that I wont have to worry about.

P.S. I am from Zimbabwan. Driving home late from tribal council... hit a puddle after just missing a Zebra. You know the rest.

I have a 96 disco - with an electical gremlin - locks sometimes do not work, interior light is dim, alarm will not engage, key will not lock, etc.
All of this is intermitent and seems related to moisture or cold. The battery is new. The alt. is fine. Seems like a short or relay that does not activate fully. The dealer is USLESS - last time they wanted to put in a new starter.
If I flip on the headlights - to pull some current it seems to straighten things out for about two cycles of lock/ staret.
Any ideas - where can you get a wiring diagram ??
I am ready to sell this dog - what to do ??
Pls reply to [email protected]

Check your battery etc earths. Intermittant open ccts can be very confusing to a computerized electrical system.

We will see what happens tomorrow. I am installing the new/hopefully better alternator. Luckily I have my old beloved Jeep Wrangler to drive while the Disco is sick. Jeeps never seem to have problems like this. :-0 I think that this web site has saved my life.
