first . . . after i've driven around for a bit and my '94 disco is good and warmed up, it'll try to die on me at traffic lights. idle starts getting really erratic, and i must put it in neutral and feed it gas until the light turns green. some little punk in his lowered honda with flow-pros and 9 ft high whale-tail always thinks i'm wanting to race, as if this thing would 0-60 in less than 12 seconds even if i pushed it off a cliff. after i've re-started the engine, i'm good to go for awhile before it tries it again. i have noticed that my idle is severely affected by electrical drain as well. it'll jump up a 1,000 rpm's by merely turning off the headlights. second . . . i smell noxious exhaust fumes coming from, well, my exhaust, but more potent than it should be. there is no smoke. just dead insects anywhere within a 5 ft radius of my tailpipe. i'm thinking of charging people to drive through their yards and fumigate their geraniums. is this a real problem or just a rover idiosyncrasy? and third . . . i have now checked every fuse and replaced every bulb in the rear of my truck, but i still don't have a left brake light. in fact, my middle lights (there are three bulbs in each taillight assembly) never work period! all the contacts look good. no rust or corrosion anywhere. i don't get it! i'm thinking of just running a wire from my 3rd taillight in the door over to this brake light so i don't get a ticket, but i'd rather do it right if possible. unfortunately, i have to do everything myself here in smalltownville, texas. every mechanic i know craps his pants when he sees me pulling up. so any help on any of these topics would be truly appreciated. |

Brake light probably corroded. Pull the bulbs out and clean. |

Running poorly after warm-up AND stinky exhaust? You might want to check your cat converters. My 94's exhaust smells like Claudia Schiffer so you've got a problem somewhere. (or maybe I do). As far as the light, it's gonna be obvious when you finally find it - til then, good luck. You may want to make sure the assembly is well grounded. Good luck, Jim |

Kevin, I had a similar stalling problem that I traced back to 2 dirty injector relays under the passenger seat. I orignally thought it was the stepper motor, but after replacing it I still had the problem. I have also heard of a similar problem caused by a partially clogged fuel filter. |

Turn on your headlights and then press the button on the left side of the cluster that looks like a light with wavy lines in front of it. I'm thinking that might activate those rear-fogs for you - extra lights for severe weather to keep folks from rear-ending you. I drove my 95 D1 for two years before someone here turned me on [sic] to that trick. e |

rob-thanks for the faq on the stepper. i'll look into that. jim- sell me your rover when your done with it. hell, my girlfriend doesn't even smell like claudia schiffer. i'll check out those cats though. i've replaced everything else up to there, so why stop now. todd- ok, dirty injector relays, stepper motor, and clogged fuel filter. got it. what the hell is a stepper motor? i better go back and look at that faq, because i'm not finding it in my haynes. erik- thank you, thank you, thank you. the mystery of the no-working taillights is solved. i still need to figure out why i'm not getting a left brake light though. but at least i can scratch this one off of my list. is that all that button does? did they at least run some wires to the front from this same switch for when you add your front fog lights? thanks everybody. |

Check your spark plug wires/dizzy/rotor are still good...30k miles and they are toast IMHO...if the wires are good, then are they loose? Replacing these worn out units stopped the same poor running set up I had once |
