The old white Disco I has come up with a new way to make me crazy. 90% of every time I apply the brakes to bring the beast to a stop I hear but don't feel a strange "clunk/click" noise emanating from the front end of the beast. Ideas? All the panhard rods bolts and bushings are tight, the radius arm control rods are good and tight, the anti-sway bar connections are tight and the brakes pads are relatively new with plenty of pad left on them. The bushes are Ironman poly's and the old beast (94) has 89K miles on it. Oh yeah, the shocks are Bilsteins. I realize it's as truck, but . . . What is it? Brakes, suspension, drivetrain, what? |

I have a 95 disco with 110K on it and am having the same problem. I also tightned everything and still had problems so I took it to my local garage and they said the wheel berings were loose so they repacked them and checked the frontend and everything looked tight and in good condition but later that night I stopped and "clunk". This is fustrating so if you figure it out let me know. I did just call the dealer and they said it could be a CV joing or Axel problem. |

I would check the engine mount nuts, they can loosen and cause a clunk that you will feel when stopping or accerating from a stop. 18mm wrench is all you need. Let me know. David C. |

How about caliper bolts? Drag link ball joints? |

Checked the caliper bolts and the Drag link joints. No joy, they're good and tight. I'll check the motor mounts this PM and report on same. Great thoughts, I appreciate it. |

The motor mounts were in fact, loose. Tightened them bad boys up and, still clunking. Bummer. Further investigation reveals some looseness in the steering box mounts. Tightened them and still have the clunk. Heavy sigh. Only this time it's not happening every time I come to a stop. So, we must be getting somewhere here. Any more great ideas? |

do you have rust around the sway bar nuts were it mounts to the front axle.. this may cause your noise when the brakes are applied it will jar the sway bar.. i tried to tighen the bolts with no luck yet seized up so if you can and it helps let me know... Eric |

have you checked the rear trailing arms and sway bar mounts? |

Oh yeah, I think that you said you checked the panhard rod, but did you check the bushing, if your P/S box is leaking it will usually leak right on to that bushing and soften the rubber. Check it with a prybar for any movement, tight bolts wont help if the bushing is worn out. David C. |

No rust and no leaks but, I like the idea of testing the bushes on the panhard rod with a prybar. I'll also take a look at the sway bar mounts on the frame. I also checked all the rear trailing arms and sway bar mounts and no joy, they're tightened up pretty well. I'll keep you advised. I've ridden around in the trunk of my old BMW to diagnose noise from the rear suspension, I wonder if there is any way to do it on the front of my Disco? |

I had a similar sound (but noe feel) coming from the left front of the truck. It turned out to be a missing retaining nut which holds the metal shield over the jack. This bracket would move from side to side in turns and forward during stops, causing the clunk. It was loud, but there was no feeling to the noise when it occured. John K. 1998 D1 LSE |

I checked the panhard rod bushes with a prybar and they're in good shape. Checked the sway bar mounts on the frame and they were slightly loose. Tightened 'em up and . . . clunk! Crap! This is getting personal now. If nothing else I'm getting a nice, tight ride back in the beast. I will investigate the jack mount as soon as I can clear my desk. As always thanks for the help. I'll let you know what I find. |

Tom, If it makes you feel any better I have the same clunk and have not been able to stop it either. I am going to have rovertym rework my radius arms soon and plan to replace all the bushings in the front suspension at the same time. I'll freak if that does not stop it. |

Sound like your upper shock mount might be going. Just a thought mine were and did the clunking thing. I replaced them with Polly Red bushes |

Disco Dad, were there any outward indications of bad upper shock mount bushes? Anything wiggle when it shouldn't, etc.? For the rest of you, I removed the jack from its cubby to see if that was the cause and . . . you guessed it! Clunk. Heavy sigh. |

have you checked the handbrake(park brake)i had a similar noise on my 300TDi a slight clunking noise just as the vehicle was coming to a stop,it turned out to be the handbrake shoes binding on the drum when hot adjustment of the brake sorted it out,the problem can be worse if the handbrake seal is leaking, oil gets onto the shoes causing them to expand when hot may be way off the mark but it cured mine |

I know you just replaced the brakes, but check the Pins that go in the front brake calipers. One may have wiggled out. When I did my brakes, one was missing causing a clunk when stopping or starting. Probably a little dangerous too.... |

Good ideas, all. I did look at all the brakes when I checked the caliper bolts for tightness and everything was in its place. That does bring up a question though, should there be an anti-rattle spring on back of the brake pads? I know I'm reaching here but I do want to rule out every possible cause here. Jeez, after all the rest of the honey, do's this weekend, I get to lay under the beast with my wrench set. Not to worry, the weather's getting good and the floor is relatively clean. |

You probably have one of our tiny Landrover assembly workers from Solihull, trapped inside your engine compartment. Thats how we get free trips to the USA! LOL .... Hope you get it fixed, I am keen to read further reports. I am UK Solihull based & UK 300tdi owner. |

Discovery Drivetrain Clonk Here you guys go!! [Don;t ask where I got this, I"m just passing on information -Jay] At long last I got a copy of the LRNA bulletin covering drive line clonk in Discoveries and Defenders. My original source never got back to me so I had to go elsewhere. For the record, no, I won't fax you a copy. I've been admonished not to "show" it to anyone. By the way, this problem exists in both manual and automatic transmissions as the bulletin lists replacment part numbers for both. Here are the salient parts: Bulletin No: 37/20/96 Subject: Gearbox Mainshaft Spline Wear Affected Vehicles: Discovery LJ 178205 onwards Discovery LJ 506525 onwards Defender LD 976480 onwards Detail: Some customers may complain of clonks and backlash in the transmission system. This may be due to gearbox/mainshaft spline wear. The clonk/backlash will be most apparent in stop/go traffic under overrun conditions or when manuvering the vehicle during parking, etc. From transfer box number 28D 460996 F (Discovery) and 22D 461124 F (Defender) all factory built LT230 transfer boxes have a revised design of input gear, featuring lengthened splines and cross drilled oil feed holes. This modification eliminates the requirement for an oil feed disk (bulletin H415) and eliminates input gear/mainshaft spline fretting/wear. Coincident with this change, the transfer box identification number has been raised to Suffix "F". |

Gents, I have a 97 Disco and after reading some of your posts I decided to get this LUCAS OIL Stabilizer Stuff. This weekend I changed my diff oil and poured a 50/50 blend of this Lucas HD OIL Stabilizer and gear oil in them. Added a bottle of the "Lucas Tranny Fix", too. No bullshit, my clunk/click stopped. I don't know why, but it did. This crap works. It didn't fix my leaky sunroof, but what the heck. I am a beleiver in this stuff now. Give it a shot, my whole rig drives better. No shit. Jay |

Kids, I may finally be on to something here. Remember that I said that the brakes were relatively new? And that the noise occurred when applying the brakes to bring the beast to a halt? Well, that may be the problem. The metal plate the pucks are attached to may just be short enough to fit too loosely in the caliper. IOW, they may allow the entire brake pad (outer, in this case) to move about one quarter of an inch forward when the brakes are engaged. Just enough to create a "clunk" when they impact the caliper. To test my latest theory I applied a liberal dose of CRC Disc Brake Quiet to the front brake pads and took it for a short spin round the block. Voila! So far, no noise! Now, before we all pack our trash and leave this problem behind, give me a couple days to see if we're home free. I shall report back. |

It's officially a closed item. No more strange and weird noises coming from the front end whilst coming to a halt. Thanks all for the help, not only did I get rid of the noise but, just as importantly, the steering and front end feel much tighter. That's a big deal cuz we ain't working a stiff suspension to begin with. I was particularly surprised at the looseness of the motor mounts. Thanks again! |
