Hi Blake, From my experience the best way to eliminate the noise is to remove the roof rack..LOL. Seriously, you could eliminate some of the noise by mounting something in front of the rack like (the Nissan Exterra's roof rack) for lack of a better example. I have seen every thing from cardboard to molded Plexiglas/sheet metal. All you need to do is cut to fit and support with wire ties or claps given the materials used (more or less). This will not stop the noise but it will reduce some. Hope this helps.

I think you can buy a "fairing" to decrease some noise.

Yakima and Thule (I think) have them sold seperately.

I have also heard that installing a floor (alum or plywood) helps to cut down on the noise.

Carl, I checked that link out. Man... either that's a super-lightweight mountain bike or that guy is 7 feet tall. Without the ladder, how do you even put a bike up there?

Cranking up the radio won't help you on the trail, Glenn. I would suggest an aggressive set of mud tires. :)

Blake,
There is a company that actually started a business to help with this problem. It is called Splat. Their site is: http://www.splatltd.com/
They can make a custom wind fairing for you. Good luck.

Jaime

Blake,

ARB use a solid floor for only the first foot or so on their racks. They claim it is to cut wind noise without adding wind resistance. Inexpensive option to try.

blake

throw a bag of dead squirrels up there!...
a sleeping bag strapped to the front will kill
the whistle. some guys have installed lights.

as russell says - the arb rack (which blows the factory one out of the water) - has a front aero pan in the floor for the fist 25-30cm. the arb rack also does not nuke mpg as bad, is quiet, already comes with a mesh floor - you can sleep on it etc etc etc and it looks cool - you could strap a rhino onto it... (joke - ha ha..)-oh the the feet don't wreck the rain gutter.

sell your adventure rack to someone else and get a arb! LOL! - if you simply must use the rack you have - do lights....imho....

Blake,
I had the same problem. Install four lights and the noise will go away.

Who sells the ARB Rack for a D1? And how much is it? Thanks a lot.

Just be glad you don't have a full length Brownchurch roof rack like on my '72 Series III. Hot dipped after assembly, every section of tubing has a hole for zinc access (and to prevent bursting during the hot-dipping). With the right cross-wind, the bloody thing sounds like a pipe organ (caliopie?) going down the road....

Cheers
