Hey all. This is my 1st time on here. Just a few quick newbie questions. I just bought a 98 Disco I a few months ago, with 59k miles on it. Now it's at about 62k, and the check engine light is on (amber). On occasion the engine doesn't want to start right up in the mornings or after it's been sitting, and sometimes the engine "burps", and hesitates. The only things I've done to it are change the oil twice. Since i'm completely new to the Rover Game, please fill me in on what I need to do or be doing to my Disco to keep it up. I'm planning on making an appointment at the Rover dealership here in town today to get it checked out. ANY help is appreciated! Thanks! Kyle S. (newbie) |

hello kyle; I too have a '98. The check engine light coming on is 'typical'. Since you are taking it into the dealership, make sure they check the computer and tell you what is causing the 'check engine' light to come on. You may want to hold off on any 'repairs' until you have a copy of their inspection report. There are a lot of things that you can do by yourself. So once you know what the 'dealership' thinks, come back to the board, search the archives for your 'problems' and then post a few questions. Good luck. |

Chris, Thanks for the reply. I'm taking it to the dealership because I bought a warranty (or should I say "service plan") when I bought the Disco used. I'm HOPING it's a good one and that they won't try to con me out of repairs (the warranty). Thanks for the advice! K. |

Also, what's this about 60k mile service? I know I sound stupid, but I'm new. |

the 60K service just covers alot of things that should typically be replaced at that time. i.e. plugs, wires, belts, hoses, fluids, etc. there was a thread here not long ago that had a scan of the actual list of things to be done. try checking the archieves. remember there are 2 lights......the amber 'check engine' light and the red 'service engine' light. the red light is set to go off at mileage intervals. the check engine light means you have to have your truck checked by an OBDII code reader. |

kyle; I believe that the 60,000 mile also includes changing the tranny filter. It is an expensive service as I recall. |

Kyle S. I just changed the tranny filter in my 98 this weekend. If you plan to do it yourself. Here are my tips... 1. start by taking loose your exhaust, at the headers. 2. loosen the connections of the exhaust all the way back to allow a little movement under the truck. 3. you will have to move your crossmember to get the tranny pan off and back on. Don't take it out just move it far enough out of the way to get the pan off. 4. after cleaning up the pan and bolts and installing the new filter bolt everything back up. I will tell you that it is a job for two people. Have lots of PB blaster and wd40 laying around for stubborn bolts. |
