'95 disco, getting around 290-305 miles. I think I have the 23.5 gal tank. Usually drop in 21-23 gallons. Driving is mixed 80-90mph on highway and lead-footing up mogully dirt roads for the rest. going easy on the highway (driving 70) doesn't seem to help much.

Avoiding headwinds helps a lot.

34 MPG with 300 tdi !!!! Thats awesome! I wish we could get more diesels here in the US. Esp in Trucks/SUVs. I think that Mercedes has stopped US diesels, the only ones that I know of are the SWEET VW tdi in the golf/jetta/bug and of course the big diesels in Ford/Chevy/Dodge pickups.

Is it possible to swap over 300 tdi in a US disco? What cost $5000 ? Ahh I can dream.

Damn, I must have a hole in my gas tank or something. I get about 200-210 on 20.x gallons with mostly city driving. Highway isnt much better. All highway on one tank might get me 250. I do know that I have a crack in the manifold gasket. Plus the roof rack and no front airdam. Any suggestions on how to eek out better fuel mileage? How much effect could the manifold gasket have?

roof rack is the main killer of mileage. removing airdamn will have little effect on the brick that you are driving. i have a '96 with a full length rack, lights on top and 32" tires with HEAVY NATO wheels and get 14-16 tops on highway driving. (with a nice tailwind!!)
ways to improve mileage? new plugs and wires. new O2 sensors. a light foot. and i am sure many other variables.

I'm suprised to hear the roof rack makes such a difference. I mean, it makes sense, but talking to D90 and Rangie owners, I've been told repeatedly that when they put roofracks on, they were surprised to notice no differnce in mileage.

gp (Garrett)
Posted on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 08:50 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

i think adding a 'deck' to the rack will help, which i have done. but there was a difference when i put the rack up there with some big hella 2000's. a decrease of about 2 mpg+. but when it comes down to it you are going to get shitty mileage with a D1 no matter what you do. i mean anything under 16 mpgs sucks anyhow, so between 13-16 does not really make much of difference. but a light foot is the key.

Drove from the Cape to Boston and back down this weekend. Doing about 75 on the highway...I'm down half a tank and I've gone 233 miles...woo-hoo! Although this morning in my 5 mile commute to work it seemed to suck down almost a quarter tank.

For those wondering, I did not take the tire size into account. So the mileage is not actual, just what the odometer says....

Around town I will get between 280 to 300 on a tank. And on the highway, I have gotten around 330 on a tank full. She's a 96 with the five speed and 110,000 on the clock.

I thought my mileage was bad, I think I would sell her for sure if I was only getting 200 - 230 on a tank.

My D1 with rooftent, 33x10'5x15 BFGoodrich, and a tuned 300Tdi engine gets about 480miles a tank. And yes it doesn't 90 on the freeway, but it easy goes 80 on the freeway, and as far as I know out of my expierence. You really really can't afford to drive 90 mph in the usa. If they catch you, you are in deep problems. Beside how much miles does a D1 with 90 miles? And after filling up your tank I am still driving my 80 miles (hahaha) Greetings from Overseas

My God!
I only get about 10mpg around town (according to my odometer, but I do have 235/85s, so probably not exact). Still, that is right at 200-210 per tank. No roof rack, front ARB, rear TJM, RN sliders, OME MD suspension --- What can I do?

Get 4.10 gearing, a free flow exhaust, Z-max 9this stuff actually works!), and if you have mud-terrain tires, sipe them. That should give you better mileage

check your odometer to the milemarkers on the highway for about 10 miles. also when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? more air in the tires.

I cant believe the extreme mileage some of you are getting out of your rigs ! I have a 95 disco absolutely stock , with 146,000kilometers , or 90,000miles and I'm getting about 9miles per gallon : ( or 21 kilometers per litre . What the heck is wrong with my truck ! It's drives great but with a thirst like that something has to be seriously wrong or we just have really bad gas in Canada ! coincidently prices in Vancouver right now are 75 cents per liter or $3.00 canadian per gallon in us funds that's about $6.00 US per Gallon !

Any suggestion on what to check on . I drive part city and part Hwy, and this is my commuter vehicle . I do have that little hose that runs from my distributer cab to the air intake plugged off (starts and runs better this way) Not sure if that would make that much of a difference for the mileage though.

Marc, I get exactly what you are. Between 200 and 210 in the summer per tank. I am right at 10 mpg. Stock tires (a little worn), roof rack with Hella 4000's, 60k miles and crack in exhaust manifold. Even when it was closer to new (24k miles when I got it) it didn't get more than 240 per tank in the city. I dont know what else to do either? Any help from anyone? I know these things are pigs but come on... 10 mpg!@?!

Stock '97, no airdam, auto-box, 91 octane. My truck gets 14.5 to 16.5 around town. Just depends on my lead foot! On the highway the best I ever saw was 370! Still had 6 gallons left on that tank. Usually I see 17 to 19 mpg, but I have hit the magic 20 a few times.

Stock 97 disco. Everyday driving gets 16 to 18 mpg. 18 to 20 highway with the cruise set at 60 or 65. Best mileage is with 89 octane. Premium robs about 2 mpg.

About 750miles

oh wait that was the Suburban

220 on the disco is about average but it leads a hard life (lots of 0-2mile trips) so it gets ~10mpg

300Tdi and 3 tanks on a 110 would be ideal for me :)

Disco Canuck,

May pay to check plug leads first. Had same problem for ages before diagnosis. All appeared fine on test equipment but obviously not. Before 9.5mpg city irrespective of driving falt out or angel gear down hill. After new leads 14-15 mpg city and 17-20mpg highway. Rack cuts ~1mpg around town or highway. ARB bar and warn probably not helping but no major lift .... yet!

Still pathetic but sweeter than tdi anyday.

if you look at my plot again, you'll see the max. number for gas mileage on the stretch between Grand Junction, CO, and Beaver, UT, about 19mpg. On the very same stretch (minus the most relaxed Grand Junction to Moab turn-off part), I've seen the worst gas mileage, <10mpg, going in the same direction, against some 35-40mph wind with wet snow. Needless to say, this is an infamous stretch with 136mi with no gas stations, and I started it with a little less than 1/2 of a tank...
It was a bit ugly to climb to the ice-covered roof rack for the jerry can...

I had a 1984 petrol disco and the best was 18mpg (IMP gallons) The usual was about 15mpg. It did have a modified computer not that it did much better than before. I now have a 1998 TDI auto and the best so far (60,000 Kms) is 31mpg. Again imperial gallons or close to 10kms/litre. We tow a 17ft caravan and get 22mpg. And it certainly does better than 55mph. We cruise around 90kph with the van in tow and about 110 kph on the highway. I have fitted a cruise control however this has proven to make economy a little worse than using the calibrated foot. Our latest trip can be seen at http://www.nqcc.com.au/The%20Adelaide%20trip%20in%20brief.pdf (300K download)

For all those out there with poor gas milage , just checked my vac assist line, it was unhooked, by previous RO, had a plug in it . Removed plug and recconnected . Now I get an extra 62 miles per tank and that's with old rotten plugs and pipe cleaner wire for cables . Not sure if the o2 sensors have ever been changed and I'm at 97,000miles. Last guy did say he had a problem passing air care , says he had to change the radiator ? not sure if he's full of BS or what . Anyone ?

So thanks to the reader who gave the good advice.

I have a 97 D1 and i just filled it up w/ 21.9 gallons after driving 309 miles in the city. Anybody looking for better mileage, don't waste your money or time messing with all that other crap, just drive more conservatively. My mom drove the disco for a week and had to fill up at 220, i drove it the next and had about 310...it's all in how you drive. Try if for one tank and see, just let off like a mile before a stoplight and keep it at 1500 rpm when starting from a stop.

How do you compensate for the larger tires? I know my speedo is five miles per hour faster with 245/75's by checking it against GPS. I was using my Garmin and a Trimble, both read the same. I thought my mileage was poor until I read this post. Now its looking like my 95 w/96k is about average. So how does tire size effect mileage? With is running faster am I getting less miles or more miles on the odometer?

My first car was a 1979 Mercedes 300D...and ever since then I have missed the diesel engine. I really wish we could get them in the states, provided we do some emissions work. But alas, that probably won't happen. You would think the yucky emissions would offset all of the Disco drivers getting 12mpg!!!

I have a 2002 D2 - Over the first several thousand miles I averaged about 12.7 mpg, mostly around town. When I bought the truck the dealer explained "sport mode" and indicated that mileage would suffer when it was used. At 12.7 I didn't figure it could get much worse so I gave decided to give sport mode a try. Over the past two thousand miles (with no change in driving pattern) my mileage has actually improved to about 13.7 mpg. This doesn't seem to make sense, but it's been very consistant.
