Someone on this board did a 2.8 tdi swap and there was a big thread, but the search tool does not lead me to it.
Yes, not only thought of but been done.
It's some guy in Colorado. Costs between 10K and 15K, depending what else you want to do.

Joey,

ECR doesn't offer the diesel conversions anymore:

http://www.eastcoastrover.com/Tdiconversions.html

snip:
"...we have dropped our diesel conversion program. The costs associated with swapping from EFI V8 to diesel, cost of our R&D, the time each project takes in the shop and such means that diesel conversions are no longer viable."

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman

The Colorado guy that did a 2.8 conversion is Richard Dekkard. You can always get some information from him on the Tdi mailing list:

groups.yahoo.com/group/tdi

As a general rule of thumb, if you're going to do a Tdi conversion expect to pay between $5-7K for the engine and most of the parts that you'll need. Based on what I've heard from other V8 to Tdi conversions, its about 40 hours worth of labor start to finish.

Thanks,

Thanks Nathan, I had not read that part.....that kind of stinks I was hoping one day to look into that...oh well I guess I will go for the 5.2 Gas engine and forget about fuel economy when and if my Disco ever needs a new motor.

Joey - FWIW - there's also the Isuzu diesel that was put in the Aus land rovers - from what little information I have on these so far it looks like a pretty straightforward swap (or at least no more involved than the TDi) I saw a few of the isuzu diesels up on ebay around the $2k mark.

regards

Jeff
