I have a '95 Discovery (automatic) and occasionally when I stop in traffic the the idle speed drops pretty low. The engine trys to compensate and the revs climb. The revs kind of oscillate rhythmically between 200 rpm and 1000 rpm and the engine seems to run rough for this period. This goes on for as long as the car is idling (usually at traffic lights). Usually the Check Engine light comes on at which point the problem goes away. Later I can reset the check engine light and the car runs fine for a week or two and then the problem comes back. I don't have a code reader and don't want to spend money at the dealer just yet as it is an intermittent problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

IAC (stepper) motor - have you cleaned it or replaced it?

Check for vacuum leaks or cracked lines. If all are original on a '95, I'd replace all (if it were me)

I'm getting this too. It's when the AC compressor cycles out that it happens mostly. I thought I had it licked by plugging the purge line from charcoal canister, but it came back after 2 weeks. All vacuum lines look good, no leaks visible, performance otherwise excellent. Stepper is not very old, cleaned it recently. fuel pressure line ok.

Thanks all. I checked the stepper and lo and behold the bloody thing was loose. I took it off cleaned and re-installed. All is running good now.
