I guess I tempted my fate all too many times saying the disco is my most reliable vehicle by far...

ok, here are the symptoms:
- in the morning, my wife calls me and says her remote doesn't work, and she had to manually lock all the doors.
it rings a faint bell to me...

- in the afternoon, my wife calls me and says she can't start the Disco. THe faint morning bell recalled, I say have the son or my brother swap the battery with the one from the rangie. My brother says the Disco cranks all right but wouldn't start.

- i come home, yank the optima from the rangie, and put it in the disco. It starts at the first turn of the key and purrs like a kitten. Happy with the result, i drive the disco to the parking spot, get out, and hit the remote button to lock the doors. Nothing.

- check the door locks' fuse - okay. No apparent malfunction of anything. Do the song and dance with a double ignition "on," to reset whatever glitch it might have from the inertia switch (don't ask, it happened before). Do the manual-prescribed deal with the remote. Nothing.

- don't know what made me do it, tried to start the car again. Cranks as a MoFo, no start.

- Measure the voltage on the battery - 12.45. Seems kinda low. Yank the brand new optima from the jeep - 12.89, put it into the disco. The disco starts right up on the first try. On the second try - nada.

- disconnect the battery for a second, re-connect, try again - starts right up. Check the voltage with engine running - healthy 14.05.

so, my conclusion was that it has something to do with immobilizer; has anyone had a similar bug happening?
Please enlighten me, I need my disco badly tomorrow.

Mine does the same thing - don't know how to fix it though. It seems lately that I have to pray that my truck will start each time i get in it

My wife's 95 has an intermittent electrical problem that is similar...

1. Get in, no lights come on, turn key, click, click...

2. Pop hood, slightly touch negative battery cable...

3. Shut hood, truck starts and may not do it again for months.

I've changed the battery thinking it was a bad post, and I've pulled the cable, cleaned all of the connections, and tested for continuity - all fine. Still happening...

I was wondering if that alarm hood switch might be involved somehow...

Anyone?? Bueller??? Bueller???

Chuckster, what you describe is textbook dying battery. Did you replace with new battery? Are you sure the new battery is good? Stranger things have happened....

I had the same symptoms with my 96 and my battery would charge to acceptable voltage but just wouldn't hold it. A brand new battery cured it. But it is possible to get a "bad" new battery. What's that status of your alternator?

I had a similar problem, not quite the same but might jog somebody elses memory. Hop in the Disco, turn the key and nothing. Try again, nothing, wait a while longer and try and it would start not a problem. Turned out to be a problem with the alarm system, it takes longer to disengage than it should. The vehicle is unlocked but the alarm brain thinks it is still in alarm mode and won't let it start. There was a fix for this as a 'known' problem in the 96. Something to try would be to lock the car with the key, not try to use the remote and see what happens.

Hope this helps

Trevor, in my case, it cranks all right, but won't fire. Once i disconnect and reconnect the battery, it starts all right.

however, central door locking doesn't work, key or remote.

So loss of power (ie battery removal) causes the alarm to reset/default to you can drive me now mode......a $20 battery disconnect switch would fix that one......but SWMBO might object to lifting the hood every time she wants to start the truck.....

Blue,

Thanks for the input, and yes I put in a new alternator and a new battery and it still happened, then, I took the new battery back and got another... still happening.

Very intermittent... can go a month or so without it happening again.

Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
