My truck has developed an (another?) annoying extra option. When in gear at idle, I get this horrendous whistling sound. It appears to be coming from the vicinity of the intake plenum on the left side. I have replaced the IAC valve bypass hose and repaired a rotted end of the line that goes from the IAC valve casting to the fuel pressure regulator and thought I had it licked, but today, I discovered it happening again. I am somewhat confused as it appears to only do this at idle (high vacuum) and mainly only in gear (engine loaded down). When I shut the engine down, it makes a wheezing sound. '95 Disco in pretty good mechanical shape-fluids maintained, etc. Good tune. I would suspect a bad bearing in one of the front of engine components, but I can't explain the need to be in gear if it were something like a belt tensioner bearing (just in case, what's the Timken number for this bearing?). I'll pull the tee piece out this evening and make sure it is clear. Paul |

Damn, I've got the same thing going on but oppisite of you. I get a weird whistle noise, (actually sounds like radio interference but the radio isn't on and the noise isn't coming though the speakers) that varies with RPM/engine speed and I can't hear it at idle. I need to give all the hoses a once over but it started last week and I don't have a clue. Jay |

Paul - look in the Dweb x-ref guide - Napa bearing number is there for the idler pulley. http://www.discoweb.org/parts.htm Good luck Bill |

Bill: Suppose it's the same bearing for the 3.9? Probly so. Thanx. I'll pick one up, just in case, but again, that wouldn't be dependent upon the engine being loaded down. Paul |

Yep - same idler bearing BTW You're right - that probably isn't your issue - but for $9.00 and 20 minutes time - it won't hurt to change it Bill |

I should clarify here - same bearing if it is a serpentine 3.9....... Bill |

I've been meaning to start a thread about the same thing. I have a 95 Disco with same problem. When at idle under 1K rpm I get the same whisle and the wheezing sound when shutdown. I have had several mechanic friends check it out and we haven't been able to isolate the noise, tried lots of tricks with stethescope type tools and can't figure it out. It did it last summer too and stopped through the winter and now again this summer. I have tried pulling vacuum hoses and the sound doesn't change so I don't think it's vacuum. I was wondering about a leak in the intake manifold? I will be following this thread for sure, can't stand that sound, it's getting really loud now. Shane |

I had a squeak/wheez/??? noise happening when I shut down that turned out to be a bad water pump. |

I considered the engine drive belt related components, but I can't correlate that (those) with the in gear condition. |

I don't think the fact that it's in gear has anything to do with it, just the RPM and when in gear is the only time the RPM's drop that low. Thought about the water pump too. How big a job is it to replace and approx. parts cost? Shane |

The water pump isn't a big job at all, just remember some bolts are longer than others. The biggest impediment to a water pump is the cost-$189.95! Ouch! I'm hoping to replace the belt tensioner bearing today to try that. At 150K, it could be nearly anything! Paul |

Had the same thing in our D1. It would do it even with the car in neutral. Revving the engine sounded like there was someone with a penny whistle under the hood. Turned out to be a leaking inlet manifold gasket. www.worst4x4.freeservers.com |

streak ...you seam like a very vengefull person its best for you and your heart to sell your disco now and change brands because the problems instore for you down the road as the miles stack up is bound to make you blow a few gaskets. then the lack of care you will percieve you are getting will really get you mad. and since I would guess that you will never use your truck for what it was really intended for, you will never recieve any of the positive off setting benifits of such a fine vehicle. your right its all the fault of Land Rover they shouldent even let them sell these pieces of shit enjoy your shallow bowl of lukewarm revenge |

LOL, the irony is that streak probably has the answer there For those with the whistle and wheeze, if you spray WD-40 around the inlet manifold, is there temporary improvement? |

OK Guys, turns out to be the power steering pump bearings. Paul |

So did you replace the power steering pump or is it possible to just replace those bearings. I've got to get mine fixed, the noise is really annoying. (on a different note) Seems odd that someone so against a particular vehicle would own one. My 95 Disco has well over 100K mi on it and I've only had to deal with a few minor problems. I for one am a happy disco owner. Shane |

Shane: I am on the hunt for the replacement bearing. I have successfully sourced several replacement pumps, but wish to avoid the obvious expense when possible. The roller bearing in the back showed obvious evidence of wear as the rollers fell out into my hand. As for your different note, I hope that wasn't directed at me as I am in the same boat as you with mainly minor failures andd nothing that isn't to be expected in any vehicle with more than 150K miles. Paul, I was referring to "Streak" and his "worst 4x4" web link on that different note. How did they fall out in your hand? Did you already remove the steering pump? I've never had mine out so I don't really know which bearings and where they'd be. |

Not only have I removed the pump, I have almost completely disassembled it in search of replacement parts. I'm still working on the o-rings and will have braided steel hoses perhaps as early as this afternoon. Once I started disassembly of the truck, I found more damage than originally expected. After 150K, the HP hose was in danger of bursting from a worn spot. The rear shaft support bearings will be here tomorrow morning, along with another pump to play with. The bearings run in an unrestrained cage so they almost have to fall out of the pump when you pull the shaft, or the back plate. I still need to make a tool to push the new cage in with the needle bearings in place. The good news is that the fittings on the ZF pump are identical to those of a GM Saginaw pump, something that has hampered development of an interchange method/system/parts kit. I'm aware of the greater pressures involved with the Sag pump, but I'm foolish enough to give it a try. At this point (ZF pump off of engine), the bracketry doesn't look that difficult to fab. I might be able to have a prototype done by this weekend if things go well. At least, should have the drawings done and my truck back on the road. No offense about the worst... Those folks shouldn't own Rovers if they don't love them! Paul |

streak is an idiot that believes that land rovers are the only vehicles to have problems and bad dealerships. I have experienced worse than rovers as have many people that I have known. He should get on with life. |
