My 96 Disco has got some steering issues. There is some play in the steering when you turn the wheel past center to the right, but no play at all past center to the left. It makes for some real squirelly handling. My wife is gonna get a DUI for weaving on the road and she doesn't even drink!
Checked ball joints, pan hard rod, alignment is fine and replaced steering damperless than 10k ago. Could it be the missing harmonic damper? At least I think that's what the big weight/cable on the right side of the rear track rod is called . Mine was knocked off somewhere in a deep creek crossing. But I've heard of Disco's missing them with no probs, so I'm a bit perplexed and reluctant to spend $ for a part that I'm not sure will fix it. Should I check the steering play adjustment on the steering box? What do you guys think?

BTW, I got my membership to the lr-discovery Yahoo!group. Thanx Ho Chung!

Scratching my head,
- Mark

checked the rubber doohickey in the intermediate shaft before the steering box? The shafts with thin rubber discs are a replace only item. Best bet is find an older shaft assy from a wreck that takes the fat rubber doughnut, as these are serviceable, and cheap.

It's not the harmonic balancer. That would just give you vibrations, not play in the steering wheel. It's probably not the pump, since that won't give you play either.

I like JPs suggestion. Failing that, it could also be a screwed up steering box.

I just had my steering box replaced and my steering pump replaced. It still turns hard to the left while right is just fine. I removed my steering dampner to make sure that it was not the problem.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Not the harmonic balancer, the harmonic damper, errr, maybe that's what it's called. Not to sure though, and nobody can seem to really tell me. Thanks for the input. Any other suggestions, things to check???

Sounds strange. Could it be understood like this: It feels like a bit resistance at certain points - like the steering is tugging in to one side, but then moving freely other directions. If so might be steering UJ.
* I'd release the whole steering intermediate shaft (it's the one jp mentions) from the vehicle to check if all the UJs are moving freely.

My best bet would rather be kingpin/swivel pin. Relatively cheap parts, but you'll have to do some mechanics for a few hours.
* Lift one front wheel at the time. Grab wheel 3 and 9 o'clock, and try push/pull the wheel (inwards-outwards axle direction, like you're trying to f**k the wheel. Any play here is likely to be swivel pins.
While you're at it:
Grabbing 12/6 o'clock trying to tilt/rock wheel and play is likely to be wheel bearings, and grabbing 3/9 trying to do the steering motion doing a rocking movement. Slack here ususally steering ball joints.

Thanks Frode, I'll definitely check that. Swivel pins sound like the culprit, don't they? Play is not really like resistance though, which was why I kinda doubted the steering shaft UJ. I just have play to the right, not to the left, past the wheel center (where wheels are pointed straight).
Strange problem.
